AROUND AUSABLE: School to vote on purchase of buses

The fundraiser for Roy Ano will be held at the American Legion Post 504 in AuSable Forks on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 1 to 6 p.m. A Michigan meal will be served and will include two Michigans, salad, beans and dessert for an $8 donation. Take outs will be available and you may place your order the day of the event by calling 420-7895 or 534-0189. There will be a 50/50 and an auction with auctioneer Eddie McCallister starting at 4 p.m Music by the Castaways will begin at 2 p.m.

Roy, an AuSable Forks native, son of Harry and the late Vada Ano was recently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. He is hospitalized at Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility where he has received aggressive chemotherapy and is doing better at this time. Roy will remain at the hospital for a while and then must return regularly after his release for follow-up treatment. His family has organized this fundraiser to assist his wife Laurie and their sons with expenses not covered by his insurance and expenses they will incur traveling to visit Roy.

Donations of desserts for the event will be gratefully accepted. Anyone wishing to donate may call Jenny at 420-7895 or Nancy at 534-0189.

Twelve members of Team KOP Wrestling Club traveled to the Schoarie Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 16.Team KOP crowned four champions: 1st place  Scott Cumber, Brandon Sawyer, John Devins and Ryan Devins; 2nd place, Reilley Peck and Landon Snyder; 3rd place, Justin Steady; 4th place. Austin Dukett; 5th place, Dylan Baker, Jimmy Kelley, Dylan Steady and Brady Steady. Team KOP is a wrestling club based out of AuSable Forks and is made up of area wrestlers age 5-18.     

Congratulations to the following AuSable Valley Central School bowling team members who competed in the Section VII Championships at North Bowl Lanes on Feb. 5. Top scores were: Boys  Team A, Zach Snow 266, 203, Jimmy Provost, 206, 233, 620; Josh Taylor, 210; Boys Team B, Ben Coolidge, 276, 628, Charlie Lacy 235; Girls Team, Jessie Bacon, 175, Katie Holland, 178, Tonie Cross, 189.  

AuSable Forks Boys Team A placed 7th, Boys Team B placed 11th and the Girls Team placed 7th. Congratulations to all the bowlers.     

Congratulations to Trever Sheehan of Jay who was named to the president’s list at SUNY Potsdam where he is a french major. To achieve the honor of being on the resident’s list, each student must complete 12 numerically graded semester hours and achieve a minimum 3.5 GPA.     

The AuSable Forks Free Library will host a Valentine’s Day Special Storytime on Feb. 12 at 10:30 a.m. There will be stories, crafts, and a special Valentine’s Day treat. Recommended ages for this event is 3 and up with a parental companion. For more information call 647-5596.     

There will be a vote held at AuSable Valley High School cafeteria on Feb. 16 from noon to 9 p.m. for the authorization to purchase three 65 passenger buses at an estimated maximum cost of $105,000 each for an aggregate maximum total sum not to exceed $31,000. To be eligible to vote you must be 18 years of age and reside in the school district. Mark the date on your calendar and exercise your right to vote.     

The AuSable Forks Ambulance Service will host a blood drive at the station on Feb. 24 from 3 to 7 p.m. Everyone attending will be entered in the drawing for a door prize.

My condolences to the family of Victor Roy Sr., 79, of AuSable Forks who passed away on Jan. 30. Victor was born in Lake Placid on Oct. 22, 1931, the son of Paul and Delia (Lord) Roy. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Fairview Cemetery in AuSable Forks. RIP Victor.    

 The American Legion Post 504 in AuSable Forks will host its 30th annual chicken barbecue on Feb. 26 from 3 to 6 p.m. The menu will include halfchicken, potato, corn and dessert. tickets will be $8 adults, $7 seniors (55 plus), $5 children under 12. Only 200 tickets will be sold. Call 647-5801 for more information. All proceeds will benefit post 504 children and youth programs.     

Holy Name School’s annual AuSable Valley Community Calendar fundraiser is underway. If you did not receive information pertaining to the purchase of a calendar you may order one for $7.50 which includes 4 listings. Additional listings are $.50 each. To purchase a calendar with no listings or additional calendars the price is $6.50. All orders must be in by March 4.

The calendars will be available for pick up at Holy Name School the week of May 23. Call 647-8444 for more information.     

Ward Lumber Company has announced team members recognized for outstanding achievements and contributions they have made to the Ward Lumber team. Kevin Kennedy, information technology manager for the Building Material Division, was named team member of the fourth quarter, 2010. He works in corporate headquarters in Jay. Congratulations Kevin.     

I am asking everyone reading this to please pray for my little nephew Luke Randy Garcia, son of Marla (Perkins) and Chad Garcia, 16 months old who was recently diagnosed with congential mitral stenosis. He is being taken to Boston Children’s Hospital this week for the first of several surgeries to treat his condition. He is critically ill and needs lots of prayers. Updates will be posted on his condition weekly in this column. Thank you all for your prayers.
