LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid municipal crews are planning to flush fire hydrants around the village over the next month.

The flushing helps get rid of sediment and dirty water, according to Brad Hathaway, Lake Placid Department of Public Works superintendent.

“A lot of areas that are dead-end and the water’s not really flowing heavily through, you can get dirty water complaints during the year,” he said. “We’re hoping to alleviate dirty water problems by flushing.”

During flushing, residents may find that their taps suddenly start running brown. Hathaway said that this can be avoided by limiting water use until flushing is complete in the area of the home.

“As we’re flushing a street or anything, we might stir up a bit of discolored water. The best thing you can do is just run your water (until it’s clear). If you see us flushing in the area, the best thing to do is not run your water until we’re done flushing.”

He said that water mains will be flushed until the water “comes out crystal clear.”
