The event was hosted by the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism and state Department of Environmental Conservation and was designed to teach people in the service industry how to educate visitors on safe and responsible use of the Adirondack Forest Preserve, specifically when deciding where to hike. The effort stems from overuse issues in the High Peaks Wilderness Area.

Andy also spent time in Wilmington with Michelle Preston, operations manager of the Whiteface Mountain Regional Visitors Bureau, to talk about new businesses and improvements in town.

It’s back to school time, and Staff Writer Griffin Kelly gives us three stories this week that fit that theme. In this month’s Eye on Education feature, he spent a day with a third-grade class at the Lake Placid Elementary School. He stopped by the LPES and Lake Placid Middle-High School on the first day of school, Thursday, Sept. 6. He also reports on enrollment numbers from schools in the Olympic Region. Some enrollment numbers were up, and some were down. Find out more in this report.

In this month’s Adirondack Living profile, Griffin spoke with Keith McKeever, of Wilmington, who is living the Adirondack dream. He is the spokesman for the state Adirondack Park Agency, and he’s active in the Barkeater Trails Alliance and mountain biking scene.

Correspondent Ed Burke reports on the Festival of Colors, which was held Saturday, Sept. 8 in Wilmington.

The Ironman 70.3 Lake Placid triathlon breezed through town last week for the second year in a row. LPN Staff Writer Griffin Kelly poses the question of whether two major Ironman races in the village per year may be too much. The response was mixed.

In other sports news this week, the Lake Placid boys soccer team played to its second draw of the season, the 40th annual Barfly golf tournament took place at Lake Placid Resort and the 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic wrapped up on Sunday, Sept. 9.
