LPHS announces 2024 valedictorian, salutatorian

LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid High School officials Monday, March 18, announced Harley Cohen as the valedictorian and Jesse Marshall as the salutatorian for this year’s graduating class.

Harley Cohen is the daughter of Dylan Cohen and Vikki Michalios of Keene Valley. Her family includes her sister, Maddy.

Cohen competes in varsity Nordic skiing, varsity cross country and varsity track and field. She is a member of the Adirondack Youth Climate Summit, Senior Class Student Council vice president, Interact Club, National Honor Society and Jazz Band. She enjoys hiking the Adirondack High Peaks, traveling, and journaling about her adventures. She works part-time as a chef’s assistant and baker at Simply Gourmet.

For Cohen’s capstone project, she is pushing to make sustainable feminine hygiene products as an integral part of the community. She will be promoting her product to youth at the Adirondack Youth Climate Summit by hosting a workshop. Her goal is to make these products available for free to the community via the local food bank.

After graduation, Cohen plans to attend a four-year university, preferably in a sunny location.

Cohen is thankful for her parents and the countless opportunities her parents have provided her throughout her life. She is proud of the way she has inspired others around her and is honored to have the opportunity to be a mentor to her younger teammates. She is passionate about encouraging others to make a positive impact on the world around them.

Jesse Marshall

Jesse Marshall is the son of Matthew and Annette Marshall of Lake Placid. His family includes his sister, Mya.

Marshall is co-captain of the varsity soccer team and a member of the varsity track team. He is president of the Class of 2024, vice president of the National Honor Society, a member of Select Ensemble and Chorus, and participated in the fall play and Broadway showcase. He enjoys gardening in his perennial garden, fishing, reading, painting/drawing, and gaming with the boys. He has a part-time job at Lake Placid Flower and Gift.

For his capstone project and AP Environmental Science Project, he is learning how to cook sustainably using as many locally grown/produced ingredients as possible.

After graduation, he plans to attend a Christian Gap Year Program followed by attending North Country Community College and then Paul Smith’s College. His long-term goal is to open his own flower nursery called Granny’s Gardens in the Tri-Lakes.

Marshall is thankful for the friendships he has built with both students and teachers. They have taught him countless valuable life lessons. He is most proud of the connections he has made with the underclassmen and hopes those connections have helped them to try new things without fear and anxiety.
