CATS seeks volunteers for trail building, maintenance

WESTPORT — Champlain Area Trails, an accredited land trust, recently announced that it is increasing opportunities for volunteers to help build and maintain trails in the region.

CATS has created over 80 miles of trails, protected 983 acres and hosted hundreds of hikes, outdoor education outings and volunteer events, attracting thousands of visitors annually. The organization relies heavily on volunteers to help build and maintain trails. Their efforts directly impact the positive experiences of all who use the trails.

“We could not work without our volunteers,” said Chris Maron, CATS executive director. “Their contributions are essential to our mission of connecting people with nature and promoting outdoor recreation.”

CATS hosts a monthly Second Saturday Trail Volunteering event and is adding an every-other-week Friday Working Hike series. The next Friday Working Hike will be held on Feb. 23 at the Wildway Overlook Trail in Westport. Volunteers will help clear brush, fix erosion issues and make the trail safer and more enjoyable.

No experience is necessary, and CATS provides all tools and training. The organization especially encourages youth, families and first-time volunteers to join.

“Whether you can volunteer for a couple of hours a month or a couple of days a week, there are many ways to get involved with CATS,” said Torey Patenaude, CATS community engagement and outreach manager. “Building and maintaining trails, helping out at our education and outreach events, assisting with fundraising or joining one of our volunteer leadership committees are all impactful ways to support our mission.”

In 2023, CATS volunteers contributed over 920 hours to building and maintaining trails and other volunteer activities. Their efforts are instrumental in helping CATS create and maintain world-class trails in the Champlain Valley that provide recreational opportunities for thousands of people of all backgrounds and connect communities to nature.
