High-speed chase with troopers in Franklin County ends in crash

LAKE CLEAR — A man from Maine fleeing Customs and Border Protection got into a high-speed chase with New York State Police on Wednesday morning. The 30-mile chase ended in a crash near the south end of Upper Saranac Lake and did not result in any injuries.

The man — Jose D. Rodriguez-Arriaga, 29, of Biddeford, Maine — is now in CBP custody, according to State Police Public Information Officer Brandi Ashley. She said she did not yet know how the chase started with CBP.

Ashley said State Police were notified CBP was looking for a blueish gray or grayish blue 2018 Dodge Durango. She said the SUV had Maine plates, a Texas registration and broken windows.

Troopers picked up the chase on the corner of state routes 30 and 458 in the town of Duane, nine miles north of Paul Smiths.

The chase reached a “high rate of speed” as it continued for 30 miles down state Route 30 through Paul Smiths, Lake Clear and Fish Creek.

Ashley said Rodriguez-Arriaga crashed the SUV and flipped it while attempting to turn onto county Route 45, also known as Panther Mountain Road, at a sharp bend in the road.

Rodriguez-Arriaga was not injured and declined medical attention from the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Tupper Lake Volunteer Ambulance and Emergency Squad, according to Ashley. She said he was arrested; charged with third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer, a misdemeanor; processed at the State Police barracks in Ray Brook; issued an appearance ticket for Brighton Town Court and released to CBP custody.

Ashley did not immediately know how many troopers were involved in the chase, but said there were many.

“When something like this happens, anyone who is available will usually go,” Ashley said.

Representatives from CBP were not immediately available on Wednesday morning to discuss the chase.
