The USA Luge doubles team of Zack DiGregorio and Sean Hollander prepared for their first Olympics on the track in Park City, Utah prior to heading to the 2022 games in Beijing, China. They shared a condo with Head Coach Robert Fegg and Jayson Terdiman, who didn’t make the Olympic team with doubles partner Chris Mazdzer due to a Jan. 7 crash at the World Cup in Sigulda, Latvia. Terdiman donated his sled to the rookies and helped them train at the Utah Olympic Park.

On Jan. 13, DiGregorio, Hollander, Terdiman and Fegg participated in a virtual press conference from the condo.Lake Placid News Editor Andy Flynn joined the event and asked the athletes the following questions.

LPN: What is the biggest piece of advice going into the Olympics from your teammates or a coach?

ZACK: “I’d say, so far, the thing that’s helped me the most — and I’m kind of wrapping my head around this — is a lot of teammates have been saying, ‘You earned this by yourselves, and now you’re gonna slide for yourseves. … As much as the team relay is going to matter, this experience is about me and Sean as sliders more than anything. Yes, we’ve had help every single step of the way, but this one is almost celebrated with sliding in the games there.”

SEAN: “The biggest piece of advice I’ve received is just ‘Enjoy the moment. There’s nothing that’s going to be like your first Olympics.’ So I’m just going to try to really live in the moment and enjoy it.”

LPN: Other than the equipment, what are your goals between now and the time you leave for the Olympics? Is it a mental game or physical?

ZACK: “Right now with the crazy times we have, it’s also going to be stay safe and stay healthy. Don’t get COVID or any injuries in this period we have before leaving for China.”

SEAN: “It’s definitely mental, just trying to get as many runs on the sled as we can. Build confidence. And just try to be as consistent as we can.”
