LAKE PLACID — Members of Lake Placid’s American Legion Post 326 will honor the service of local veterans with a series of flag ceremonies on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

There won’t be the usual gathering at the legion this year, nor a parade on Main Street, because of the coronavirus pandemic and restrictions on mass-gatherings, according to Legion Commander Stuart Spotts. But residents can join the flag ceremonies as long as they adhere to social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines.

The first ceremony starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Adirondack Community Church on Main Street. An American flag honoring Paul Thornton will be lowered, and a flag honoring Richard Smart will be raised.

At 9:50 a.m., a flag honoring Stanley VanCour will be lowered at the former AMC Lake Placid. VanCour’s flag will be the last flown at the old hospital, according to Spotts. A new flagpole has been installed at the new hospital on Old Military Road.

A flag honoring Arthur Volmrich will be lowered at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid on Old Military Road at 10:10 a.m. A flag for Harry Allan Jacobs Jr. will be raised there.

After that, at 10:30 a.m., a flag at the new hospital will be raised for Henry Michael Cooney Jr.

The final flag ceremony at the American Legion Post 326 on Main Street will start at 10:50 a.m. Flags for Daniel Dougherty, Steve Perry and Raymond Pratt will be lowered, and flags for Kenneth Hare, Raymond Levitt and Guy Wescott.
