Keene justice race too close to call

Election Day ended with the Keene town justice race too close to call — with a 30-vote margin and more than 200 absentee ballots that won’t be counted for more than a week.

Between the nine-day early voting period and Election Day, 470 Keene residents cast ballots in person, according to uncertified results from the Essex County Board of Elections. Barbara S. Dwyer, running on the independent Dwyer line, garnered 250 votes. Henrietta B. Jordan, on the independent Justice For All line, received 220 votes.

Although Dwyer won with in-person voters, the Essex County Board of Elections has received 258 requests for absentee ballots from Keene voters. As of Tuesday, 204 absentees had been returned.

Election officials have said they will not start counting absentee ballots until Nov. 12. The deadline for the board of elections to receive these ballots is Nov. 10, but since the 11th is Veterans Day, they will not begin until the 12th. Military and federal absentee ballots will be collected until Nov. 16.

Starting at $1.44/week.
