Preview of this week’s Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID – In this week’s Lake Placid News, the war on plastic comes home to the Olympic Region as we explore two stories on the topic.

Staff Writer Griffin Kelly spent some time researching Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed ban on single-use plastic bags at stores and speaks to some local business owners to answer the question, “How would New York’s bag ban affect businesses in Lake Placid?”

Griffin also stopped by the Green Goddess Natural Market and Scape Cafe & Deli on Saranac Avenue to speak with co-owner Tammy Loewy about the store’s effort to go plastic-free.

On Monday night, Adirondack Health closed its emergency room at AMC-Lake Placid on Church Street and re-opened it Tuesday morning at the new location on Old Military Road at the Lake Placid Health and Medical Fitness Center.

Correspondent Naj Wikoff traveled to Plattsburgh last week to hear author and environmental activist Bill McKibben speak about climate change. He has a report on the event.

Arts correspondent Steve Lester interviewed quilt maker Bethany Krawiec, of Upper Jay, for this week’s Artist Profile. She has six quilts in the current Lake Placid Center for the Arts quilt show.

In other news, Lake Placid village Trustees Jason Leon and Peter Holderied will be seeking re-election in March, the Lake Placid High School is preparing to host its annual Winter Carnival next week, the eight candidates for the LPHS Winter Carnival king and queen have been announced, Saranac Lake residents gathered to support keeping the North Country Community College pool open and Keene’s Dan Plumley will be leaving the Adirondack Wild group.

In addition to columns from Naj Wikoff (On the Scene) and Martha Allen (Martha Sez), we have updates from the Lake Placid Public Library and Lake Placid Rotary Club.

SPORTS

The FIS Freestyle World Cup soared through town last weekend, with moguls at Whiteface Mountain on Thursday and Friday followed by aerials Saturday at the Olympic Jumping Complex. Justin A. Levine was up on the mountain for the moguls while Lou Reuter covered the aerials competition.

Lake Placid High School athletes were in action last week as well. James Flanigan had a big day at the North Creek Ski Bowl, finishing first in a highly competitive cross-country skiing race of the Queensbury Invitational. The Blue Bombers girls basketball and boys hockey teams are also featured in this week’s Lake Placid News.

Skating correspondent Christie Sausa was in attendance at last weekend’s U.S. Long Track Junior Championships at the James B. Sheffield Olympic Speedskating Oval. She provides a full report of the event that was used to determine the United States team at the world championships.

In Winterberg, Germany, the senior team at USA Luge has been gearing up for the World Championships this weekend, but it was unclear how much competition Saranac Lake native Chris Mazdzer would be participating in with his recent neck problem.
