Preview of this week’s Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID – In this week’s Lake Placid News, the state Olympic Regional Development Authority said goodbye to Olympic Center General Manager Denny Allen last week as he retired at the age of 63.

Allen’s last day – after spending 37 years working at the Olympic Center – was Friday, April 27. LPN Editor Andy Flynn sat down with him a week earlier to talk about his career and his family’s legacy in the community of Lake Placid.

Flynn also spoke with Lake Placid Outing Club board member Debbie Erenstone about the club’s final winter trip this past weekend to Tuckerman Ravine in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. She also gave details about the club’s annual meeting May 9 at the Lake Placid Elementary School, where parent leaders and board members will create a summer trip schedule for area youth.

Staff Writer Griffin Kelly stopped by the High Peaks Resort’s Lake House Monday, April 30 to report on the USA Luge party to watch Olympic silver medalist Chris Mazdzer compete on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” on TV. Mazdzer and his dance partner, Witney Carson, have moved on to the second week of competition.

On Wednesday, ORDA announced that the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center in Wilmington will open for one last day on Saturday, May 5, making it the longest season in the facility’s history.

For this month’s Adirondack Living feature, Griffin spoke with Wilmington resident Chelsea Walker about skiing 104 days at Whiteface Mountain.

In other news, the village of Lake Placid has begun a massive sewer project on Main Street, the Lake Placid and AuSable Valley central school districts have proposed budgets with tax levies that are under the state-mandated tax cap, three candidates are running for three positions on the LPCS school board, and the Adirondack Daily Enterprise’s recent job fair echoes labor shortage in region.
