More than 600 take on Lake Placid Classic

LAKE PLACID — More than 600 people took part in the 54th annual Lake Placid Classic which returned on Saturday, Oct. 10 to the North Elba Show Grounds.
Along with its usual half marathon and 10K race, the Lake Placid Classic held a 5K race for the first time ever this year. There were 273 people who did the Half Marathon, 198 who took part in the 10K and 145 racers who completed the 5K.
All of the proceeds for the race will directly benefit youth programming in the region, as well as Adirondack Health’s Fit for Life and Medical Fitness Scholarship Fund.
Jason Simpson of Boulder, Colorado, was the overall winner of the men’s half marathon, finishing in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 49 seconds. Anthony Cauley of Contoocook, New Hampshire, was second in 1:25:22, while Thomas Clifford of Syracuse was third in 1:25:55.
Brooklyn native Christine Meyer (1:27:59) won the women’s half marathon title, followed by Delmar’s Katie Grossman (1:33:34) and Olivia Christmann (1:35:30) of Boston, Massachusetts.

Riley Grossman of Highland Park, New Jersey and Syd Steger of Lake Placid won the men’s and women’s 10K race titles, respectively. Grossman finished in 36:58, while Steger crossed the finish line in 41:19.
Marko Draganovic of Lake Placid was second in the men’s 10K in 37:52, while Matt Minafo of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, was third in 39:42. Oneida’s Amelia Bowman-McCoy (42:07) placed second in the women’s race and Ray Brook’s Amanda Gibbs (44:11) was third.
In the new 5K race, Saranac Lake’s Zachary Smith took home the crown in 17:00, while Westport’s Michael Bodnar, who has won this race’s 10K in the past, placed second in 17:02. J. Jones of Hastings on Hudson was third in 20:20.
On the women’s side, Mirabella Sanford of Deposit won the 5K race in 20:46. Roisin O’Neill (23:44) of Highland Park, New Jersey was second and Trista Hawke (23:57) of Saranac Lake was third.
