LP’s Leila Fey sets XC course record

WESTPORT — The Saranac Lake and Lake Placid cross country teams put together another standout meet on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Westport Golf Course.

The Red Storm girls completed another sweep, to remain unbeaten in league racing, and while Lake Placid’s girls only had four runners, Leila Fey set a course record en route to another individual win.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid’s boys squads also swept the meet, earning wins over Moriah Boquet Valley, Ticondeorga and Seton Catholic. The two area teams did not race against each other.

The Blue Bombers’ Fey, an eighth-grader, won the girls’ race in 18 minutes, 52 seconds, breaking the previous record of 20:27 set by Saranac Central’s Sienna Boulds. Teammate Norah Francis finished right behind in 20:23 for second place.

After those two finished, five Red Storm girls runners closed out the day with Asa Bruno (21:05) leading the way in third place. Saranac Lake’s Clementine Guenette (21:19) placed fourth overall, and FinLee Orapallo (21:24) was fifth.

Pepper Laxson (22:00) and Cadence Kennedy (22:01) rounded out the Red Storm’s scorers in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

The Red Storm girls, which is now 13-0, had 11 runners crack the top-15 en route to a 15-50 win over both Moriah Boquet Valley and Ticonderoga and a 15-48 victory over Seton Catholic.

The Blue Bombers were rounded out by Holly Ernstone (23:17) in 11th and Rose Wenzler (27:16) in 22nd. Seton Catholic’s Evelyn Palma (22:15) was the only non-Tri-Lakes runner inside the top-15 in the girls race.

However, on the boys side, Seton Catholic’s Colby Chase was the top finisher, crossing the finish line in 16:36, which was also a course record. The previous best was set by Saranac Central’s Noah Thayer in 17:29.

Saranac Lake’s Keaton Daley placed third in 17:25, and teammate Emmett VanBuskirk also cracked the top three with a third-place finish in 17:34. Ticonderoga’s James DeFranco (18:05) was his team’s top finisher, placing fourth, while the Blue Bombers’ Graham Scull (18:11) was fifth.

Both Saranac Lake and Lake Placid earned 15-50 wins over Moriah Boquet Valley, since they had an incomplete team. The Red Storm also earned a 20-43 win over Seton Catholic and a 21-36 victory over Ticonderoga. The Blue Bombers topped Seton Catholic 20-43 and beat Ticonderoga 23-24.

The Red Storm had two other runners place inside the top-10 as Ebin Meissner (18:14) earned sixth and Rowan Popp (18:14) placed seventh. Ben Ziemann (19:13) and Colin Glascock (19:16) also had solid finishes, placing 14th and 15th, respectively.

Lake Placid’s boys had solid finishes from Jim Gugliemi in eighth place in 18:26, Doug Gugliemi in ninth in 18:39 and Connor Mannion in 10th in 18:40

The Blue Bombers were rounded out by Jesse Carlson (19:33) in 17th, Will Preece (19:53) in 19th, Sam Skutt (19:59) in 20th, Tyler Erenstone (20:26) in 25th and Asher Murray (25:55) in 41st.

Up next, the Saranac Lake and Lake Placid cross country teams will race again at AuSable Valley Central School at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. The meet will also feature host AuSable Valley and Saranac Central.

Burnt hills invite

BURNT HILLS — The Lake Placid girls cross country team earned a third-place team finish in Division I racing on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Burnt Hills Invitational. The Blue Bombers boys also had a strong showing, placing sixth out of 20 teams.

Racing against some of the state’s best, Leila Fey and Norah Francis led the pack for the Blue Bombers with a first and fourth-place finish, respectively, in a race that featured 108 runners. Fey won the race in 18:23.3, while Francis crossed the finish line in 20:06.6.

Duanesburg’s Lakelyn Laudato was second overall in 19:44.2, while Norwood-Norfolk’s Allie Snell (19:51.8) was third.

Lake Placid’s girls earned 151 points to place third out of 16 teams. Norwood-Norfolk won the team title with 55, followed by Marymount School in second with 96.

The Blue Bomber girls final scorers were Holly Erenstone (22:44.6) in 34th place overall, Ruth Mahaney (25:14.1) in 72nd and Rose Wenzler (25:32.1) in 76th.

On the boys side, Lake Placid’s Graham Scull led the way with a 20th-place finish in 17:57.1. Brothers Doug (17:57.1) and Jim Guglielmi (17:58.6) weren’t far behind, placing 21st and 22nd, respectively.

The Blue Bomber boys finished the race with 146 points. Oakfield-Alabama was first 89, Norwood-Norfolk (127) was second and Ticonderoga (144) was third.

Haldane’s Owen Powers won the boys Division I race in 15:45.2. Seton Catholic’s Colby Chase was second in 16:12.3, and Lake George’s Rory Linehan was third in 16:18.9

Lake Placid was rounded out by Connor Mannion (19:15.7) in 51st; Jesse Carlson (19:24.7) in 58th; Will Preece (19:45.9) in 67th; Sam Skutt (19:57.5) in 70th and Tyler Erenstone (20:17.5) in 80th.

In Division II racing, the Red Storm girls had seven girls crack the top-25 in the 126-person race to win the invite with 49 team points. James I O’Neill was second overall with 83 points, followed by Marcellus with 120 in third.

Saranac Lake’s boys placed sixth overall in their Division II race, earning 185 points. Ichabod Crane won with 78. Fonda-Fultonville and Albany Academy tied for second with 103.

Meadow Nashett kicked off the strong day for the Red Storm girls, placing fifth overall in 19 minutes, 25.3 seconds. Teammate Nora Daley finished a bit behind in 19:31.1 for seventh place overall. Academy of the Holy Names’ Maeve Joyce won the race in 18:25.9.

On the boys side, Emmett VanBuskirk (17:04.8) and Keaton Daley (17:13.3) led the way for the Red Storm, placing 19th and 24th, respectively. Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Nathan Geroux won the boys title in 15:36.3.
