Lake Placid Library News: Activities heat up for summer

As summer approaches, the library is gearing up for an exciting season ahead. We wish our Director, Bambi Reid Pedu, all the best in her future endeavors and warmly welcome Elizabeth (Bazz) Perry as the new LPPL Director, starting July 1. Additionally, we are pleased to welcome Joshua Allen as the new Information Technology Librarian. Along with the rest of the staff, both are looking forward to a busy and fulfilling summer.
LPPL is now open Monday to Friday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The annual Community Day was held on Sunday, June 1 at the Horseshow grounds with many in attendance enjoying the free food, drink, music and prizes. This year’s designated youth volunteer was Parker Scanio, a Lake Placid High School senior. Dave Ballestrini was awarded the 2025 adult volunteer of the year. Congratulations to them.
— LPPL Guy Brewster Hughes Art Gallery — On display now through Oct. 5 is The World Figure & Fancy Skating Pop-Up Museum. This exhibit features:
1. Commemorative trophies from the World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships in memory of John Curry and in honor of Lorna Brown, donated by Lorna Brown.
2. The World Champion’s Crown and Crystal Gems of the Jeweled Sport, donated by Shepherd Clark.
3. The World Figure Sport’s Trophy for Extraordinary Individuals, in memory of Suzanne Shelley Clark.
4. The World Figure Sport’s Maribel Vincent Trophy for Lifetime Achievement.
Additionally, the exhibit includes much more about the history of the sport.
From Oct. 8 to 12, the Pop-Up Museum will move to the 1932 Olympic Arena for the 2025 World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships on Black Ice. The public is invited to visit the gallery and view this amazing exhibition during library hours.
— Storytime with Ms. Linda — We invite you to join us every Friday morning at 10:30 in the children’s room throughout the summer months! On July 11, at 10:30, we are excited to welcome a special guest, RIVERJACK Z, who will entertain both parents and little ones alike. (Perfect for our preschool-aged friends)
The theme for the summer reading program is “Color Our World.”
Other items include: Tuesday, July 1 at 10 a.m. Ages 3 and up. Readers’ Theater Performance: So Tortoise Dug by Emily Kastner with Eloise, Henri, Will and Taika. Extension activities and special treats after the performance; Tuesday, July 8 at 10 a.m. Ages 3 and up. Meet author Veronica Salazar: Listen to her story in Spanish and English, then learn a traditional craft from Margarita Island; Tuesday, July 15 at 10 a.m. Ages 3 and up. ColorOur World with Flowers: A read-aloud, discussion with a floral designer and hands-on activities. Children will create a centerpiece to take home. RSVP required; Tuesday, July 22 at 10 a.m. Ages 3 and up. Colors of Camouflage with the Pont Au Roche State Park Nature Center: Join a state Parks Environmental Educator to explore ways animals use camouflage to hide. Children will make their own camouflage and play hide-and-seek. Tuesday, July 29 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ** Note: two program times. For all ages. — Colors of the Wild with Vermont Museum of Natural History: Explore the difference in animals’ visual experiences and how plants and animals make use of sight and color with live animals!
Join us for the Fourth Annual Adirondack Family Book Festival on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lake Placid Middle/High School! The festival brings together an illustrious and diverse group of children’s and YA authors and illustrators to meet their readers of all ages, read aloud and talk about their work. Activities that pair books with the natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains and hands-on art making and discovery are also planned. With so many talented authors and illustrators in attendance, there is sure to be something for everyone at the Adirondack Family Book Festival.
