HISTORY IS COOL: 100 years ago

Local mayonnaise

Lake Placid is being provided with freshly made and very palatable mayonnaise for salads. The Lewis brothers are producing this in a small plant on the Earl Barton property. A house to house canvass has been made, and the product is now being placed in stores. So far users report they like it, and “Lewis Mayonnaise” is selling very well.

Ernest Lewis is employed at Lake Placid store, where he has been working for about three-and-a-half years. L. W. Lewis, to whom the excellence of the new salad dressing may perhaps be ascribed, has been employed the past two summers as an assistant cook at Lakesyd Clubhouse.

Olney Hotel sold

F. E. Everest of Wilmington has purchased the Riverside Inn in Wilmington, formerly known as the Olney Hotel, and plans to run it in connection with the Whiteface Mountain House, when the summer season opens. Mr. Everest has sold the cottage connected with the Inn to Eugene Duprey.

Railroad closed

The Paul Smith’s Electric Light. Power and Railroad Company was last week given permission by the Public Service Commission to abandon operations of its road between Lake Clear Junction and Paul Smiths until June 1. The road is used for summer travel almost exclusively. Arrangements have been made for an overland service during the winter.

New skating rink

A new fancy skating rink has been laid out at the Lake Placid Club, and a large force of men is kept busy for several hours each night flooding the rink.

Tomorrow evening a fancy costume ice carnival will be held in honor of the visiting figure skaters. The rink will be decorated with lanterns and evergreens. An orchestra will furnish music for the skating, and comical interludes will be introduced. A dinner will be given to the skaters tonight.

Booze runner

Thirsty citizens of SuSable Forks had a chance to slake their thirsts at bargain prices last week Tuesday. A car carrying 22 cases of Canadian ale, and driven by an Albany man whose name was not ascertained, struck a telegraph pole near the depot and was wrecked. The booze runner was traveling at a fast clip, coming from the north, when a Ford appeared from the side of the granite shed standing at that point and headed for the Albanian, who in attempting to avoid colliding with the Ford ran full force into the pole.

The car was badly damaged, but the wet goods were intact. A crowd quickly gathered and the driver, apparently fearing the coming of an officer, began disposing of his load “at a greatly reduced price” with the result that within a few minutes the entire load had been carried away by the new owners.

Man gets lynx

Asa Lawrence, veteran hunter of Wilmington, captured another lynx recently. The animal was a large one and is thought to have been the mate to the one killed by Mr. Lawrence a year ago.

Ice meet

Today’s first race will be the 2:24 pace. The 2:14 to be held today has been called off, but horses entered for this race will be seen at the Saranac Lake meet.

A mile track was made today instead of the half-mile track because the horsemen were fearful of having horses cut on short turns. This work was done by Fred Fortune, Herman Reed and others who assisted. Tomorrow’s trot and pace races scheduled are the 2:17 and 2:30.
