Lake Placid royalty

A crowd of 2,200 people filled all available seats in the arena Friday night to witness the annual crowning of king and queen of winter.

Lowell Thomas, author and traveler and news voice of the air was invested with the regal robes and title of King Tahawus. Mrs. Ellen Mason, wife of Frank Mason, vice president of the National Broadcasting Company, was crowned as Queen Wa-Ho-Par-Te-Nie.

School nutrition

A new nutrition program for under-nourished children which has been approved by the board of education will be instituted at Lake Placid High School next week.

Replacing the schedule of several years during which children have been served milk twice daily, the extra nourishment provided at the school will now have more variety.

About 150 children, underweight either through lack of funds to buy the necessary foods at home or through a wrong diet in homes more fortunate, will receive a dish of hot oatmeal each morning upon their arrival at school. At 10 a.m., they will be served a glass of hot malted milk or cocoa made with whole milk, and in the afternoon either the same drinks or a glass of tomato juice.

Cod liver oil is also being provided to pupils who are in need of it, purchased through home relief funds.

Ski club news

Officials of the Lake Placid Ski Club have announced that all skiers who anticipate entering the ski events during the winter are invited to meet with the club members at the arena Friday evening for general discussion and instruction as to the cross-country, downhill, slalom and senior and junior jump events.

The club members are giving free instruction each Wednesday afternoon on the Grand View novice hill.

The first senior ski jumping event to be sponsored by the club this season will be held on the stadium hill Saturday morning at 10.

On Sunday at 2:30 p.m., the Lake Placid Ski Club slalom competition will be held on the newly constructed slalom course at the Lake Placid Country Club. The club will act as host to spectators and contestants at the clubhouse following the competitions. Transportation to the course will be arranged by the sports office, leaving the Olympic arena at 1:30 p.m.

Daylight saving

The first meeting of the year for the chamber of commerce will be held at the arena Monday evening, with committees to be appointed by William Hurley, president.

Local representatives of the New York Central Lines are to be interviewed relative to train schedules for this village next summer in view of the discussion scheduled for Monday on the subject of the adoption here of daylight saving time. The views of the chamber members are to be ascertained before the subject is called to a vote by residents of this village.

The proposition of daylight time was defeated last year due to some extent with the difficulties in coordinating meal hours at hotels with arrival and departure of guests.
