LIBRARY NEWS: Library is filled with holiday cheer

December at the Lake Placid Public Library is busy with holiday activities and visitors browsing the holiday art show while enjoying the views of Mirror Lake and the mountains from the reading porch.

The Lake Placid Elementary School Art Show will be on display in the library’s art gallery throughout December.

Over the last two weeks, a movie production team for “A Jar Full of Christmas” used the library as a holding center for a few days. It has been a unique experience to observe their professionalism and creative teamwork under the direction of Candice “Candy” Cain. The movie is set to be released during the 2024 holiday season. On Dec. 9, Main Street was filled with music and laughter for the annual Lake Placid Holiday Village Stroll. The children, with help from their parents, participated in games and crafts set up around the library before continuing with their stroll.

The library will be closed on Monday, Dec. 25 for Christmas Day and will reopen on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. We will also be closed on Monday, Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day and will reopen the following day at 9:30 a.m. We wish you all a happy and safe holiday season!

Watercolor class

We are excited to share that the holiday watercolor class we held on Nov. 27 was a huge success. So much so that we had to add a second day to accommodate everyone interested. It was amazing to see how each participant created a unique piece of art. We want to give a big shout-out to Erin Johnson for her many talents. Thank you.

LEGO Club

The LEGO Club had a meeting on Nov. 30 with a unique theme. All members were asked to build structures for either a kitten or a puppy. The results were impressive, and everyone enjoyed the experience. The club had another meeting on Thursday, Dec. 21 with a winter theme. The next meeting is scheduled for 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18. I can’t wait to find out what the next theme will be.

Story time

Ms. Linda shares her favorite holiday stories and songs with children and families every Friday morning at 10:30 in December. Come and enjoy a fun seasonal event with your child.

Homeschool Thursdays

The Homeschool group gathered on Dec. 7 to celebrate the holiday season. Various craft stations were set up for families to create personalized holiday cards and handmade gifts.

At 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, join us as we learn about volunteerism at the Lake Placid Food Pantry (basement of St. Agnes Church) with a read-aloud, discussion and tour in advance of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service.

A StoryWalk of Kate Messner’s “Over and Under the Snow” will have a grand opening celebration at the Adirondack Mountain Club’s Cascade Welcome Center on state Route 73 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13. Families can walk, ski or snowshoe the StoryWalk, make a craft with the Lake Placid Public Library, learn about winter animals and their tracks with ADK and explore winter with PBS KIDS activities and books from Mountain Lake PBS. This event is free and open to the public.

Please join us at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 for a read-aloud and discussion of children’s books by author and playwright Calvin Alexander Ramsey. If you plan on attending, RSVP by calling 518-523-3200 or emailing librarian@lakeplacidlibrary.org. This program is made possible through a partnership with John Brown Lives! and has been generously funded by the North Elba Local Enhancement and Advancement Fund.
