LIBRARY NEWS: Plenty of fall activities at the library

Students attend a Homeschool Thursday program at the Lake Placid Public Library. (Provided photo)

The vibrant colors of the leaves, along with a bit of chill in the air, lets us know that fall is here and all that goes with it. I am reminded of the snow on Whiteface Mountain this past week.

Many visitors hoping to see the last of the autumn leaves have dropped into the library to view the beauty from all the windows on the reading porch.

Great Give Back

The library is participating in the Great Give Back this year. It is a community service initiative created by the Suffolk County Public Library Directors Association and is exactly as it sounds — libraries giving back to their communities.

We are collecting diapers (all sizes) and baby hygiene products (wipes, lotion, shampoo, etc.) here at the library until Oct. 21 and presenting them to the Lake Placid Ecumenical Food Pantry on Oct. 23. Please join us in giving back to this wonderful community that gives so generously to us!

If you are in need of such items, the food pantry is located in the basement of St. Agnes Church on Hillcrest Avenue and is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays.

Coiled Basket Workshop

Coiled Basket Basics will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30. Learn how to make your own coiled basket using cotton rope and yarn. Unless you are very speedy, this will be a project you will start at the library, then finish at home. It’s a great way to use up your leftover and odd balls of yarn! Adults and teens welcome. We will provide materials, but if you wanted to bring in your own yarns to use, that is also okay. Sign up at the front desk or call 518-523-3200.

LEGO Club

This new club will be held at the library from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the last Thursday of each month, beginning Oct. 26. Any family with children ages 4-12 are welcome to participate. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The group will design and collaborate on LEGO construction. Please RSVP to 518-523-3200. Anyone who has LEGOs they wish to share, the library will gladly accept donations.

Homeschool Thursdays

On Oct. 12, the group welcomed scientists from Paul Smith’s College and the Adirondack Watershed Institute to explore the illuminating intersection between lake data collection and analysis through the visual arts.

On Thursday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m., join us for a program focused on bioluminescence with materials provided by Mountain Lake PBS. We’ll begin with a brief read-aloud and PBS video, followed by interactive stations. All students will leave with a related book, courtesy of Mountain Lake PBS. Programs are geared for families with children in kindergarten-grade 6, but other ages are welcome.

Story time

Join us every Friday morning at 10:30 for stories, songs and activities with Ms. Linda. Parents and preschoolers have enjoyed the fall stories, and I am sure Ms. Linda has a few Halloween tales ready for the coming weeks. With no school on Friday, Oct. 27, there will be a special Halloween story time. All are welcome! Wear your costumes, too.

Ask a genealogist

The third Wednesday of each month, professional genealogist Judith Harper is at the library to meet with anyone that might have hit a “brick wall” in researching their family tree and don’t know what to do next. If you are interested, just call the library or stop in to sign up for a free consultation.

Literacy Volunteers

Literacy Volunteers of Clinton, Essex and Franklin Counties is seeking volunteers for tutoring services. If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer for this rewarding program, please call the main office at 518-564-5332 and speak with Joclyne Erkenbeck or Sarah Wright.

Halloween

On Tuesday, Oct. 31, we welcome trick-or-treaters to stop in for a treat. Come on in and give us a scare!

Math tutoring

If you find yourself struggling with math, and looking for a little help, give us a call at the Lake Placid Public Library. We offer free math tutoring sessions for any student in grades 6 through 12. Chris Ward will be available by appointment only. For more information, call us at 518-523-3200. This program is made available thanks to the Adirondack Education Foundation LP Education Foundation Fund.

Rockwell Kent display

A new book display, depicting works that were illustrated by Rockwell Kent, who was an American painter, printmaker, illustrator, writer, sailor, adventurer and voyager, is now set up on the first floor. Pplease come in and browse, and maybe checkout these amazing works. Kent (1882-1971) used to live in Keeseville at Asgaard Farm.
