LIBRARY NEWS: Check out the new ‘Hidden Gems’ shelf

March is generally a month where the weather can range from warm to cold mixed in with rain or snow at any time. In spite of the weather, the Lake Placid Public Library is a great way to spend some time browsing our newest selections.

After completing and filing taxes for over 160 people, the AARP volunteers have concluded tax service for this year. Thank you to these wonderfully capable volunteers: Katie Volz, Travis McElyea, Betsy Senkowski, Carol Pinney, George Leedom, Wayne Johnson, Janet Smith, Pamela Leff and Pat Giles. Once again, they have given so many of us the gift of their knowledge and time which is appreciated by all.

On our main floor, where all the fiction is located, Ms. Linda has organized a new display shelf revealing very special books that have not been chosen recently. Introducing our new “Hidden Gems” shelf of old favorites! These are treasured novels of Linda, Erin, and a patron. Do you have a hidden gem that you would like to suggest? Let us know! Stop by and check these out and help to free them from the weed pile.

Spring break

It’s just a few more weeks before spring break. If you are not traveling, we invite you to spend some time with us reading and relaxing on our reading porch. Through the large windows, you may witness spring arrive or enjoy reading or playing board games in the children’s room.

Ms. Linda will be entertaining children and their parents each Friday morning at 10:30 with stories, songs, and activities.

Also the library is thrilled to remind friends that Kate Messner’s “Over and Under the Snow” StoryWalk is still located on the ski trails at the Cascade Welcome Center. Many skiing enthusiasts have already taken advantage of Kate’s descriptive text and Christopher Silas Neal’s distinctive artwork. “Over and Under the Snow” is a book for all ages, helping both young and old slow down (even on skis) to observe, wonder, and learn about nature that’s, literally, under our feet.

Children’s programming

Homeschool Thursday families met on March 2 as a Family Drop-In event. Stations were set up for families to explore the history, science and technology behind castles, with books, hands-on activities and take-away resources.

On March 30, the Homeschool Group’s theme will be “Design Games.” Families will explore low-tech (but fabulously fun) concepts for game design through a read-aloud, discussion, and hands-on activities. Programs are geared toward children in grades K-6, but other ages are welcome.

Free parking is available in the St. Eustace Church lot; please leave your library card or a note on your dashboard indicating you are at this library event.
