August was amazing here at the Lake Placid Public Library.

The Adirondack Family Book Festival at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site was the culmination of much planning and investment from so many people and volunteers. We thank all of them for the success of the event. For all those who attended, we share in your praise for a job well done.

With all schools back in session, we look forward to some new fall happenings at the library.

Poster contest

The poster contest yielded so many creative entries this year, making the judging quite difficult for our esteemed judges, Keela Rogers and Peter Lynch. We want to thank all of the participants and The Bookstore Plus for their continued support of the event. A special appreciation to Stewart’s Shops for donating the ice cream certificates. The winners are: pre-K, Layla Hubbard; K-2, Dash Scull and Emma Hubbard; grades 3-5, Eloise Ruttan; grades 6-8, Naomi Netter.

Each winner will receive a $20 gift certificate to The Bookstore Plus and will have their artwork made into a poster for display in Lake Placid.

Gnome Around

Visitors and patrons were able to locate the gnome that had been hiding in the library. They took a picture and sent it to library Director Bambi Pedu and she held the drawing at the end of August. Thanks to all who participated. We have a winner! Congratulations to Grayson Castonguay.

Reading Log, Teen Summer Reading Bingo

There were many young readers in Lake Placid this summer judging by the number of Reading Logs and Reading Bingo entries we received. We again congratulate all the participants and Stewart’s Shops for the ice cream certificates.

New painting at Ms. Linda’s Storytime

We have a new painting in our children’s room. It was donated by the artist, Judy Rand Scammell in honor of all her memories of the library. Thank you, Judy. It will be enjoyed by many children for countless years to come. Last Friday, Ms. Linda and Judy unveiled the painting after a special story about a bear. The following statement is from the artist: “I have enjoyed the Lake Placid Public Library since I was a young child. My grandmother was the first to take me for a visit. Chevy Lamb was the librarian back then and was loved by all the children. At 7 years old I was able to visit the Library alone. The library was magical, I felt like Alice in Wonderland going down the rabbit hole. I have always had a great love and interest for all animals. And the interest developed and informed through books. Most of what I read was absorbed into my being. The library provides that conscious awareness, almost like being in nature. We are so fortunate to continue to have wondrous dedicated, librarians that carry on the traditions of long ago.”
