LIBRARY NEWS: Spring programs in full swing at Lake Placid library

Kindergarten students from the Lake Placid Elementary School visit the Lake Placid Public Library. (Photo provided)

As we gaze out the Lake Placid Public Library’s reading porch window at frozen Mirror Lake and the white-tipped mountains, we welcome the warmer weather that April is bringing to the North Country.

If you are spending your spring break here in the Lake Placid area, please stop in and visit us at the library. You can check out the new arrivals and bring some sunshine to the staff here. We would love that. Just a reminder, that Main Street is now one way, going northbound from the post office to Saranac Avenue. For anyone wishing for a drive-up book delivery, we would be more than happy to deliver to your car window. The library’s ramp has been temporarily removed in anticipation of sidewalk installation and wall repairs. With the help of a LEAF grant from the town of North Elba, we will be installing a new, improved and easier accessible ramp. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes and if anyone is in need of assistance, call 518-523-3200. We can bring your materials out to you, bring them to your car, or find some other way to get materials to you if needed. Please don’t hesitate to call us. Thank you for your patience through this construction project.

Library budget vote

The Lake Placid Public Library will hold its budget vote at the library, 2471 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 10. To be eligible to vote, an individual must be a U.S. citizen, a Lake Placid School District resident for at least 30 days, and be 18 years of age. The public may obtain a copy of the amount of money, which will be required for the ensuing year for library purposes, during the seven days immediately preceding the vote.

Stewart’s Holiday Match program

Thank you to Stewart’s Shops and their Holiday Match program, to Jason Jones and his team, and to all of the local people who have used the Stewart’s Shops this year, as you helped contribute to their $500 donation to be used toward the library’s children’s programs this year. We will use it for activities, crafts, books and StoryWalks.

We appreciate the help with our children’s programming. To learn more about the Stewart’s Holiday Match program, visit www.stewartsshops.com/community-giving.

Children’s room

A few weeks ago, Ms. Linda had a very nice visit from the Lake Placid Elementary School kindergarten class. The children were given a tour of the whole library with Ms. Linda, Mrs. Bambi Pedu, and Mrs. Armstrong as their guides. They enjoyed a special story from Ms. Linda about the history of the Lake Placid Public Library way back in 1884. It was wonderful to have a group of little ones coming back into the library, We have missed their yearly visits.

Homeschool Thursday

The group met on Thursday, April 7 in the children’s room at the library and were introduced to old-fashioned games and toys. There were take home books and activities for all who attended. At 10 a.m. Thursday, April 28, students will celebrate National Poetry Month through a read aloud, hands-on activities, and a Poetry Parade to the Bookstore Plus to celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day. If you have a favorite poem, please bring it to share. Programs are geared toward children in grades K-6, but other ages are welcome. Free parking is available in the St. Eustace Church lot (please leave your library card or a note on your dashboard indicating you are at this library event). For updates, email us at librarian@lakeplacidlibrary.org.
