Happy New Year from the Lake Placid Public Library.

The Holiday Village Stroll 2019 was another successful, busy event here on Main Street. The holiday card-making stations were set up all over the library to accommodate all the creative guests of all sizes and ages. What a wonderful time it was at the library.

Now that the holidays are all over, we are looking forward to what 2020 will bring to Lake Placid and the public library.

The staff would like to thank everyone for their thoughtfulness during the holidays and always throughout the year. We are so lucky to serve you this past year and all the many years ahead.

Art gallery

The children’s winter-themed art display was a hit in the art gallery this holiday season. I heard many positive comments about the colorful winter scenes. The Lake Placid Elementary School K-2 students have helped brighten up the gallery for the holidays.

Anyone interested in displaying their works of art in the gallery please contact Bambi Pedu at 518-523-3200 or librarian@lakeplacidlibrary.org.

Artist Guy Brewster Hughes’ great wish was that this library, which he loved, should one day have a public space devoted to works of Adirondack artists. This gallery – named after Hughes – is the fulfillment of that wish. We invite the public to visit and experience the wide range of talented artists who show at the gallery on a regular basis.

Children’s room

After all the holiday happenings in the library this past month, we will be continuing the Homework / Adventure Club for grades 3-5 on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Students in grades 3-5 complete homework but spend the majority of club time engaged in a variety of STEAM projects based on student interests. Permission is required prior to the first day of attendance.

If anyone has any questions about the club, please call the library at 518-523-3200 or email librarian@lakeplacidlibrary.org.

Story time with Ms. Linda

Ms. Linda’s story time is every Friday at 10:15 a.m. in the children’s room. These past few weeks the children have been entertained with some fun Christmas stories. This month, Ms. Linda has a lineup of fun winter-based stories that should delight all of our little friends.

AARP free tax help

The official date to begin filing personal federal and state IRS tax returns is coming up soon. The AARP volunteers plan on being ready to complete and e-file forms for local taxpayers. The volunteers who attend the sessions in Albany to be updated on changes to the tax laws and recertified by the IRS each year will begin setting up their computers and other equipment in the next couple of weeks. The service is free, and there are no age or income requirements.

To make an appointment, call the library at 518-523-3200. Someone will take your name and an AARP representative will return your call to set up a time and tell you what documents to bring.

Knitting group

Every Tuesday from 6:45 to 9 a.m., a group of knitters meet and share their talents and skills with each other. They are always looking for new members, so if you are interested, please call Jennifer Newhart at 518-354-3246 or Heidi Roland at 518-524-6151.

Upcoming special events

In February, Lake Placid will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Winter Olympics. The library will honor the event with a meet and greet at with Olympic speedskating gold medalist Dan Jansen on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to noon. Olympic-themed crafts and games will be set up in the children’s room. This is free and open to the public.

Starting at $1.44/week.
