AROUND AUSABLE: Fire department to hold car wash; Walk-A-Thon slated

Two fundraiser’s will be held on May 8th to support Cheri Goodman’s Team (High Flight) for the Relay for Life Walk to be held on June 18 at the Clinton County Fairgrounds in Plattsburgh from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Cheri has nine members on her team and they are all working very hard to reach the goal they have set prior to this event. Cheri is walking in memory of her dad, Ron Addison, who lost his valiant battle with cancer last November.

    There will be a car wash at the AuSable Forks Fire Department from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 8. It will cost $5 per car. Also, in front of the Grand Union from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be raffle tickets  available for the “You Choose Raffle.” Prizes are: four tickets to Red Sox/Yankee game Aug. 7; 32” flat-screen TV; two tickets to a Mets game at Citifield; one-year membership to Gold’s Gym; 4 WGNA Countryfest tickets/Altamont Fairgrounds July 2010; or $500 gift certificate to Hannaford’s. You circle the prize you want on your ticket. 1/$5, 3/$10 or 8/$20. 

    Lumeria Bags are also available for $5 each; you can decorate or they will be decorated for you for $5 and put in memory of a loved one you have lost to cancer or in honor of someone you know who is fighting cancer or is in remission. The bags will be lit at the fairgrounds throughout the night. Cheri thanks everyone who has supported her and looks forward to seeing everyone at her fundraiser’s this weekend.     Cub Scout Pack 54 from AuSable Forks recently visited the Lake Placid Police Department as an achievement toward earning their Bear Badges. Lake Placid Police Officer Jim Staats led the tour. Scouts attending were: Mason Douglas, Riley Lawrence, Alex Wesley, Matt Pray, Dillan Cumber, Tanner Forbes, Ross Douglas and Bradley Pray. Good luck on obtaining all your future badges boys.    

    The bowling season at Riverside Lanes has come to an end and the winners of the second half of each league are: Monday Night Men, AuSable Club Rondeau’s Nailers, Gavin Isham, Bob Hanley, Chuck Bedard, T.P. O’Neill, Kevin Parrow and Jim Rondeau; Tuesday Night Women, no split season, results next week; Wednesday Night, Men Mountain and Valley, FEDEX, Jeremy Lowther, Tyler Nelson, Sean Murphy, KC Zaumetzer, Mike Bola and Adam Chapola; Thursday Night Women, Sharkies Dollies, M & M Diner, Stephannie Rennie, Jen Bolton, Jacqueline Coolidge, Tiffany Lowther, Monica Bola and LeAnn Allen; Friday Night Mixed, Cardsharks, PK and Val Coolidge and Adam and Jacqueline Coolidge.   

    All winning teams will roll off this week against the winner of the first half. Good luck to all teams. Winners will be announced as league champions in my next column.

    The Lonesome Traveler Band featuring Vi and Mitch Terry, Joe Gero, Willy Carnes, and Sonny Caron will be playing at the Town of Jay Community Center on May 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. They feature round and square dancing and there is no charge. There is a full concession, raffle and 50/50. Grab your dancing shoes and stop by for an afternoon of fun.    

    Hats off to Black Brook Town Clerk Peg Hoey who was recently interviewed and granted  the title of the oldest serving town clerk in New York state. What an honor for this wonderful lady who is so loved by this entire community. She has served in her position since 1980 and you will find her faithfully in her office during the week from 9-1. Congratulations Peg and may you hold this office for many years to come.  Please know how very appreciated you are.   

    There will be a free Rabies Vaccination Clinic for all pet dogs, cats and ferrets at the AuSable Forks Ambulance Station on May 13 from 6 to 7 p.m.All dogs, cats and ferrets 3 months or older are required to be vaccinated againsat rabies and receive a booster within 1 year. the booster protects them for three years. You must show your pet’s rabies vaccine certificate to be eligible to get the booster. Ferrets must be vaccinated each year. All pets must be accompainied by an adult and must be on a leash or in a carrier. A $5 donation per pet will be gratefully accepted.    

    Wells Memorial Library in Upper Jay May schedule of events:  May 6  Board of Trustees meet at 7 p.m.; May 17  Quilters’ Gathering at 4 p.m.; May 18  Writer’s Collection from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

    Joan Wilson Art Exhibit will be on display all month with selected pastels and etchings.    

   

    Town of Jay Cleanup Day will be held on May 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All residents must bring items to the collection site at the Town of Jay Highway Department on the Valley Road in Jay. Proof of residency required upon request. This is a free service to town of Jay residents. All children must remain in the car.    

    The Rotary Club of the Ausable Valley will hold thier annual Walk-A-thon on May 23 at 1 p.m. the walk begins at Lake Eaton in the Woodlands and continues to the Ambulance Station in AuSable Forks where all participants will be treated to a free lunch. Sponsor sheets are available at the AVCS and Keene Central School Guidance offices. For more information, contact Linda Dubay at 647-5302.    

    The AuSable Forks Volunteer Fire Department will host its fourth annual Chicken Barbecue on May 29 from 3 p.m. until all are served. $7.50 for adults, $6 for seniors and children 5-12. Under 5 eat for free. Take-outs are available. Call 647-5582 to purchase tickets or get them at the door.

Anyone interested in serving on this year’s committee is encouraged to attend this meeting.
