Bombers girls, boys hoops fall

LAKE PLACID — The Saranac Lake girls basketball team fended off a late rally from the Lake Placid Blue Bombers Monday, Feb. 2 to earn a 33-28 road victory along with some area bragging rights.

The Red Storm jumped out to a 13-7 lead after the first quarter and seemingly remained in control for most of the contest.

However, while down nine points, the Blue Bombers nearly pulled off the comeback with a 7-2 run in the fourth quarter to bring the score within four. But a late 3-pointer from Emma Akey essentially put the game out of reach.

Akey finished with a game-high 22 points, which included four 3s. The win improved Saranac Lake’s overall record to 3-13, while snapping a six-game losing skid.

The Red Storm’s Aria Knobel scored four points, while Ashlyn Tomaszewski added three. Teammates Sophie Baker and Mackenzie Crane each chipped in with two points.

Ella Moodey had 12 points, which included two 3s for Lake Placid, which dropped to 4-10 overall. The Blue Bombers’ Alayah Whittaker had nine points and Ellie Shipman scored seven.

Seton Catholic 58, Lake Placid 46

The Lake Placid boys basketball team suffered a 58-46 loss to the Seton Catholic Knights at home on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Seton Catholic started hot in the first quarter, going up 19-1, before the Blue Bombers crawled back into the game to trail by only six points midway through the third quarter. The Knights then used an 18-14 fourth-quarter run to seal the win.

Hugh Kissel paced Lake Placid with 18 points, including three 3s. Sean McCauley added eight, Calbe Wylie had seven and Zach Kissel scored five. Lake Placid is now 2-14 overall.
