LAKE PLACID — After snapping its four-game win streak to kick off the week, the Saranac Lake volleyball team rebounded on Sept. 30 with a 3-0 road victory over rival Lake Placid.
The Red Storm secured back-to-back sets, by scores of 25-13 and 25-12, respectively, to open the match. Despite the Blue Bombers’ picking up the intensity in the third set, Saranac Lake edged out a 25-22 win, securing its seventh victory of the season.
Lake Placid’s head coach, Makenzie Patinella, said it wasn’t the outcome that her team hoped for, but she was still proud of how they performed in the third set.
“If they continue with that communication and that skill — it reminds me of our first game against (Northern Adirondack) — then I think we will be in a good place for the rest of the season,” she said.
The Blue Bombers are now 1-8 overall, and their lone victory came in the first game of the season against NAC.
“We’ve been struggling, but I still have faith and they have faith,” Patinella said. “We just need one win to get that confidence back.”
Ellie Shipman paced Lake Placid with nine assists, eight digs, five kills, four points and one ace. Brooke Meyer also recorded eight digs to go along with her three points and two aces. Fiona Sullivan chipped in with seven digs and two points.
Saranac Lake’s victory comes just a day removed from the team’s 3-0 home loss to the Beekmantown Eagles. After struggling in that contest, Red Storm head coach Megan Czadzeck said it feels a lot better to turn things around, especially without holding a practice in between games.
“I had to make some changes based off of how we played yesterday,” she said. “It was a good game to do it, and I feel like I felt like the girls went in pretty confident.”
The Red Storm got a solid number of its points from the service line, as the team recorded 15 aces. Czadzeck said her team has been killer at serving all season long.
“I have a philosophy: ‘Get the ball and get it over,'” Czadzeck said. “‘The best serve is the one that’s in. So just get the ball in,’ that’s all I worry about. But, they’re all pretty talented with serving.”
Saranac Lake’s Sophia McBride paced the way from the service line with eight aces. She also had a game-high 21 points while playing stout defense with 16 digs.
“Sophia really brought it tonight,” Czadzeck said. “She really killed it with serving. She definitely was the player of the game, as far as I’m concerned.”
Lexie Donaldson also had a standout performance for the Red Storm, finishing with a team-high 17 digs, while adding nine points, five aces, four assists and four kills. Sophie Czadzeck led the team with 29 assists.
Up next, the Blue Bombers were slated to host Northern Adirondack at 6 p.m. on Oct. 2. The Red Storm traveled north to take on the Peru Nighthawks on Oct. 2.
Lake Placid and Saranac Lake will face each other again in the regular season finale on Oct. 29 in Saranac Lake.
