Leila Fey qualifies for state track meet

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid track and field team will send Leila Fey, a seventh grader, to the NYSPHSAA state championships this weekend.

Fey qualified after winning two events at the Section VII State Qualifiers on Friday, June 6 at Moriah High School. She claimed the 1,500-meter event in 5 minutes, 1.59 seconds, before claiming the 3,000-meter race in 11:00.30.

The NYSPHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships were slated to take place at Middletown High School on June 13 and 14.

Seton Catholic’s Bianca Spiegel (5:18.93) was second in the 1,500, while Saranac Lake’s Clementine Guenette (5:35.86) was third. Fey also secured the 3,000-meter by nearly 30 seconds as Saranac Central’s Nora Mesec (11:29.61) was the runner-up.

The Lake Placid girls were rounded out by Ashe Gagnon’s fourth-place effort in the 100-meter hurdles in 20.69.

On the boys side, the Blue Bombers had a pair of strong finishes from Aidan Fay, who placed second in the 1,600-meter in 4:32.96, and another second-place effort in the 3,200-meter event in a time of 10:31.16.

Saranac Lake’s Jake Kollmer (4:26.32) was the winner of the 1,600-meter. Kollmer also secured first in the 800 in 2:00.13. Also in that race, the Red Storm’s Alex Evans (5:01.18) was sixth overall, followed by Lake Placid runners Trey Mariano (5:01.26) and Jesse Carlson (5:19.09) in seventh and eighth, respectively.

Lake Placid’s Jim Guglielmi also had a solid day, placing third in the 400-meter in 57.57, behind Saranac Central’s Braedon Waldron (53.89) and AuSable Valley’s Avonte Yeates (55.10).

In the throwing events, the Blue Bombers’ Michael Kern placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 35 feet, 3 inches. Saranac Lake’s Dustin Burke swept both throwing events — shot put and discus.

Lake Placid’s Nicholas O’Brien closed out the meet with a fourth-place performance in the triple jump with a leap of 29-8. Saranac Lake’s Liam Nobles won both the long jump and triple jump for the third year in a row.
