LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid softball team secured its fourth victory of the season with a 9-8 home victory over the Boquet Valley Griffins on May 13, despite a late rally from the Griffins.
The Blue Bombers jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead in the first inning as seven different players scored a run. Lake Placid’s Willow Wood added a two-run single during the inning, while Brooke Beaney and Brooke Meyer each had an RBI single.
The Griffins added their first run of the game in the fifth inning, to make the score 7-1, before the Blue Bombers scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of that inning.
While trailing 9-1, Boquet Valley’s Charlotte Faber scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, before scoring six runs in the top of the seventh to nearly complete the comeback.
“The first four-and-a-half innings were super,” Lake Placid’s head coach Greg Hayes said. “And the pitchers just sort of lost it a little bit at the end. They were having a lot of trouble with the hard surface.”
The Griffins scored most of their runs during the final inning through walks and passed balls. Boquet Valley had a potential game-tying runner on base; however, a ground ball to shortstop allowed Lake Placid’s senior Anisa Cecunjanin to tag out the runner to secure the victory.
The Blue Bombers improved to 4-7 overall with the win. The team previously lost to the Griffins 10-5 on April 9 — the first game of the season for both teams. Hayes said he likes how much his squad has improved so far.
“Defensively, we’re 100% better than we were a couple of weeks ago,” he said. “We’re still struggling a little bit with hitting. We’re getting good hits, we’re just not getting enough of it.”
On May 13, Beaney led the Blue Bombers offense with two hits, which included a triple. Freshman Addi Colby also added two hits in Lake Placid’s seven-hit outing. Meyer, Wood and Kelsey McKillip each had a single.
Wood started on the mound for the Blue Bombers and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. She finished with three strikeouts. Lilli Draper pitched one inning and had one strikeout before Wood returned to the mound in the seventh to close out the game.
Emma Conley started for the Griffins and had two strikeouts as Hickey came in relief in the third inning and struck out seven batters.
Boquet Valley finished the contest with four total hits — with two of those hits coming in the seventh inning. Alex McNaughton, Jalynne Orciani, Ella Pulsifer and Phoebe Pulsifer each had one hit.

TENNIS

It was a tale of two outings for Lake Placid’s tennis teams on May 13. The Blue Bomber boys swept the AuSable Valley Patriots 5-0, while Lake Placid’s girls fell to the Patriots 5-0.
It was one of the quicker tennis meets of the season so far. None of the matches went to a deciding third set, one was cut short and both teams earned points from the other, having to forfeit due to roster shortages.
Henry Becker led the way for the Bomber boys with an abbreviated 4-0 win. He wasn’t on the court for long, as AuSable Valley’s Liam MacDougal withdrew from the match early on due to illness. Lake Placid’s Parker Scanio put up a strong performance at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-0, victory over the Patriot’s Josh Daniels.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, Lake Placid’s Porter Dominesey and Ian Munsen earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over AuSable Valley’s Kyle Spooner and Kamdyn Owens. The Patriots forfeited their No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches.
The closest, longest and final match of the day was fought in the girls No. 1 singles spot, as AuSable Valley’s Abi MacDougal held off Lake Placid’s Raquel Arrezza 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) to seal the clean sweep for the Patriots on the girls side.
MacDougal was up a break at 6-3, 5-3 before Arrezza broke back. The opponents then traded a pair of games to force a tiebreaker. MacDougal locked in and held steady to secure the victory in straight sets. At No. 2 singles, the Patriots’ Ava Belzile defeated Jennifer Giroux 6-3, 6-1.
In double’s play, AuSable Valley’s Veronica Uss and Becca Uss defeated Lake Placid’s Fiona Sullivan and Zoe Carpenter 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while AuSable Valley’s No. 2 doubles duo of Serena Brandt and Ardyn Post earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Blue Bombers’ Sophie Spanburgh and Avery Lamoy. Lake Placid forfeited the No. 3 doubles match.
