Nordic nationals take place this weekend

LAKE PLACID — Elite-level Nordic combined athletes and ski jumpers from the U.S. will compete here this weekend at the United States Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined National Championships during the Flaming Leaves Festival.

Athletes will jump at the Olympic Jumping Complex on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. The Nordic combined athletes will then compete in the cross-country portion at Mount Van Hoevenberg at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

“We look forward to having athletes from all over the United States gather at the magnificent facilities in Lake Placid for this year’s championships,” Nordic Combined USA Chairperson Jill Brabec said.

The Nordic combined athletes are a part of the Nordic Combined USA organization, which was formed this year to take over the funding of Nordic combined after changes within USA Nordic left the sport without financial support.

Nordic combined, which consists of a ski jumping competition followed by a cross-country ski race, is one of the original Winter Olympic sports. However, Nordic combined is the only Winter or Summer Olympic sport that does not have a women’s competition. The International Olympic Committee has discussed the possibility of dropping the sport altogether from the 2030 Olympics.

Nordic Combined USA is part an international movement that hopes ensure the inclusion of Nordic combined in the Olympic Winter Games beyond 2026 and the addition of women to the 2030 Games.

“We have a brother and sister on our national team and due to the gender inequality in this sport only one of them is eligible to be named to the U.S. Olympic Team,” Brabec said.

The organization has raised about half of the amount of money needed to fund the 2024-2025 season in just three months and building a legion of supports.

“This is a grassroots organization with big goals,” Brabec said. “From supporting the U.S. National Team athletes to give them the best shot on the international stage to advocating for inclusion in the Olympics to working with local clubs around the U.S. to provide opportunities for development level athletes, all our work ties into creating a sustainable future for this legacy sport.”
