LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid girls basketball team jumped out to an early lead at home on Feb. 12 and never looked back, snapping a three-game losing streak by routing the Johnsburg/Minerva Irish Jaguars 36-19.

The Blue Bombers got off to a rocky start on the defensive end to open the contest, but still managed to outscore its opponents in all four quarters to improve their overall record to 5-12.

“We were turning the ball over way too much and we kind of cleaned that up in the second quarter,” Blue Bombers head coach Jeff Potter said. “The third quarter was a little better. I thought they played good defense and shot well. We’re still working on rebounding, we were giving them second chances, but overall I was really pleased with how we played.”

Lake Placid led Kyra Jordon and Abbey Light, who each scored 13 points in the win. Light also recorded three 3-point shots while Jordon had one.

“Our leadership with Abby and Kyra was really important for us,” Potter said. “They had a good balance there tonight.”

Danna Perez added seven points for the Blue Bombers and Margaret Thatcher chipped in with two. Potter added that Perez is starting to gain more confidence as the season progresses.

“I keep telling her to keep the cement shoes at home and bring her jumping shoes,” he said. “She (needs to) catch that ball and looks to go to the basket. Thats kind of her next progression for getting to be a little bit more effective offensively.”

The Irish Jaguars, who were looking for their first win of the season, hung around with Lake Placid in the early stages, trailing 8-5 in the middle of the opening quarter.

In the final minutes of the first, Light drained a 3-pointer to push the Blue Bombers’ lead to 11-5.

Lake Placid extended its lead in the second and third to 26-13, due to some solid shooting from Perez and Light. The pair combined for 11 of the teams’s 15 points during that stretch.

In the fourth quarter, Jordon, the lone senior on the Blue Bombers roster took control of the contest, netting six points — most of which came from mid-range — to close out the game.

“Kyra is Kyra,” Potter said. “Sometimes I’m going ‘No’ and (other times) she’ll drain some shots you don’t think are going in. I’m proud of the way she has played all season and Abbey. The two of them have been great leaders for these younger girls all season.”

It was the second time this season Lake Placid upended Johnsburg/Minerva, the Blue Bombers 33-29 on Jan. 8. The Irish Jaguars fell to 0-15 overall.

Johnsburg/Minerva’s Mackenzie Mulligan paced her team with seven points, while Elise Noel added six. Kaylie O’Hara contributed with four points and Lillian San Antonio had two.
