LP boys ski to Nordic invite title

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid varsity boys Nordic team won the Section VII Nordic Invitational their home course at Mount Van Hovenberg on Saturday, Jan. 27.

The Blue Bombers won the varsity meet with a total of 13 points, followed by Queensbury in second with 18 and Guilderland in third with 33 team points. Saranac Lake was fourth with 36 in the 13-team race.

The Red Storm placed second in the girls’ varsity race with 26 points and the Blue Bombers were third with 34. Shenendehowa won the race with 24 points. Ten teams competed in the girls competition.

Lake Placid’s Max Fey placed third overall in 22 minutes, 1.1 seconds, with Aidan Fay not far behind in 22:13.3 for fourth place. Colin Francis contributed to the overall team victory with his sixth-place finish in 22:32.3. The Blue Bombers also had strong finishes from Ethan Cash (29:58.4) in 22nd place and Parker Scanio (33:23.13) in 30th.

Queensbury’s Ben Jenkins was the boys overall winner, finishing in 20:22.6. Glens Falls’ Forrest Slingerland placed second in 21:35.6.

Saranac Lake’s top skiers in the boys race were Owen Keal, who placed eighth in 22:52.3, Mason Stoddard (24:04.0) in 12th and Ebin Meissner (25:06.8) in 16th. The Red Storm was rounded out by Jake Kollmer (26:01.5) in 17th and Liam Stoddard (26:11.1) in 18th.

Keene’s lone skier, Henry Crowl, placed 20th in 29:06.7.

On the girls side, Saranac Lake’s Tyler Burth led the way among area finishers, placing fifth overall in 29:17.8. Adirondack’s Cora Hinsdill won the girls race in 26:39.4. Alivia Hopsicker of the Town of Webb was second in 27:42.8 and Shenendehowa’s Courtney Krawiecki was third in 27:53.8.

After Burth’s finish, the Lake Placid duo of Maya Garrison (29:53.9) and Holly Erenstone (30:40.4) crossed the finish line in sixth and seventh place, respectively. The Blue Bombers’ Harley Cohen finished in 21st in 35:40.2.

The Red Storm’s Kaylee Holmes placed 10th overall in 31:58.3, followed by her teammate Cadence Kennedy in 11th at 32:25.4. Saranac Lake’s Pepper Laxson (36:42.2) in 22nd and Kelsi Burth (47:29.3) in 32nd closed out the race.

The Lake Placid and Saranac Lake Nordic teams will have a bye week this week. The squads will return to racing on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Dewey Mountain Recreation Center in Saranac Lake.
