Empire State Winter Games torch relay ends Feb. 1 in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID — The 44th Empire State Winter Games torch relay concludes its five-day, 700-mile journey here at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1 at the opening ceremony for the four-day event.

The torch relay begins Sunday, Jan. 28, from two starting points: the Buffalo and Poughkeepsie areas. The two routes, from west and south will converge on Feb. 1 and head to Lake Placid for the final leg. Here’s where it will be in the North Country ahead of the opening ceremony.

– Canton Community Bank, 80 Main St., Canton, 9:30 a.m.

– Tupper Lake Community Bank, 75 Park St., 12:30 p.m. Local and area officials and dignitaries will participate in a torch welcoming ceremony.

– Saranac Lake Community Bank, 46 Broadway, Saranac Lake, 2:30 p.m. Escorted by the Saranac Lake Police Department, members of the Saranac Lake High School track team will run the torch down the George H. LaPan Highway to the Saranac Lake Community Bank.

– Zappone Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, 8556 state Route 22, Granville, 9:30 a.m.

– Ticonderoga Community Bank, 117 Montcalm St,, Ticonderoga, noon

– Lake Placid Community Bank, 2166 Saranac Ave., Lake Placid, 3:30 p.m. Lake Placid area youth hockey players will carry the torch to the Olympic Center for a special torch ceremony.

Along with visits to sponsor Community Bank locations, the torch relay involves up to 30 communities, schools, sports clubs, mascots, arenas and other venues as the ESWG flame makes its way east and north. In connecting three corners of New York state, the relay symbolizes a unifying spirit, inspiration and resilience of the ESWG.

The ESWG, the largest amateur, Olympic-style, winter multi-sport event in the northeast is expected to draw around 2,500 athletes competing in more than 20 events. In addition to Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, Paul Smiths and Wilmington will host events during the games.

The opening ceremony starts at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Olympic Center’s 1980 Herb Brooks Arena. The theme for this year’s ESWG event is “Then and Now,” celebrating the history of ESWG and recognizing the commitment and dedication of the participating athletes over the years.
