Area Nordic teams compete in 5K race

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake boys and girls Nordic teams earned a victory over the Lake Placid and Keene Nordic teams in the 5-kilometer skate race on Jan. 23 at the Dewey Mountain Recreation Center. More than 60 athletes competed in comfortable conditions, leading to fast finish times.

In the boys 5K race, 13 skiers finished under the 20-minute mark, as the Red Storm took the win with 10 points. Lake Placid had 16 points and Keene had 45.

Saranac Lake senior Owen Keal was once again the fastest boy, finishing in a time of 15:08, narrowly edging out the Blue Bombers’ Aidan Fay in 15:09. Fay’s teammate, Colin Francis, rounded out the podium in 15:49.

On the girls side, Saranac Lake picked up its first full-team win of the season. The Red Storm recorded 11 points, which beat Lake Placid (12) by a single point. Saranac Lake’s Tyler Burth earned first place with a time of 17:47. She was followed by a pair of Blue Bomber skiers, Holly Erenstone (18:10) in second and Maya Garrison (18:11) in third. Pia Morelli was Keene’s top finisher, placing fifth in 19:32.

Section VII against teams from around the state at Mount Van Hovenberg on Saturday in the annual Section VII Invitational. The invitational will also be used as a preview of this year’s NYSPHSAA State Championship Nordic race, which will be held in Lake Placid on Feb. 26 and 27.

Classic relay race

LAKE PLACID — The Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Keene Nordic teams faced off at Mount Van Hovenberg on Jan. 18 in a classic relay race, competing in two-person teams.

On the girls side, the Red Storm team of Tyler Burth and Kaylee Holmes finished in first place with a time of 23:21 over the 6K course. Burth had the fastest individual girls time, completing the course in 11:05, while Holmes had the fourth fastest time in 12:16.

Following close behind the Saranac Lake team was the Blue Bombers duo of Garrison (11:26) and Cohen (12:09) in 23:35 for second place. Keene’s Morrelli (12:49) and Zarela Gulli (13:58) rounded out the podium in 26:47.

In the boys race, the Red Storm’s Keal (9:37) and Jake Kollmer (10:20) posted a solid time of 19:57 to seal the team victory. Saranac Lake also claimed second place, with Mason Stoddard (10:38) and Ebin Meissner (10:26) finishing in 21:04. The Lake Placid duo of Francis (10:06) and Connor Mannion (11:39) followed in third with a time of 21:45.
