Bombers boys, girls hoopers fall at home

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid girls basketball team got off to a solid start in the Jan. 3 home game against the Indian Lake/Long Lake Orange when the team trailed by just one point heading into intermission. In the second half, the Orange took a commanding lead and defeated the Blue Bombers 34-24.

While Lake Placid ultimately fell, it was definitely a step in the right direction for a squad that has just six total players on its roster — four of which are new to the varsity level.

“We’re constantly learning,” Blue Bombers head coach Jeff Potter said. “They’ll give me minutes, but we’ve got to get more experience. The only way we’re going to get it is by playing games.”

Kyra Jordon, the team’s lone senior, led Lake Placid with nine points. The Blue Bombers’ top scorer this season, Abbey Light, a junior, had five points.

“Abbey had an off night,” Potter said. “Against Willsboro, she was shooting much better and five threes. She’s our leader on the court, and our offense kind of goes as she goes.”

Lake Placid’s Danna Perez, Margaret Thatcher and John Corrow chipped in with four points each.

The Blue Bombers jumped out to an 8-6 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, both teams struggled to score as the Orange took an 11-10 lead at halftime.

After intermission, the Blue Bombers showed their inexperience and allowed Indian Lake/Long Lake to get off to a 17-5 run, extending the Orange’s lead to 28-15 heading into the final quarter.

“The second and third quarters were a little light in the scoring column,” Potter said.

Indian Lake/Long Lake’s Pailin Hample, who led all scorers with 18 points on Jan. 3, powered her team during the third quarter, scoring nine points, including one 3-pointer during that run.

The Orange’s Marissa Chisman added six points in the contest. Camryn Hosley, Kaitlyn Cannan, Abigail Hall and Daphne Seaman chipped in two points each. The Orange improved to 6-2 overall with the win.

With Lake Placid trailing by 13, the Blue Bombers jumped out to a 9-3 run to open the final quarter to bring the score within seven points. Jordon and Corrow combined for nine of the team’s 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Following the contest, Lake Placid suffered an 89-35 road loss to the Chazy Eagles before earning its first victory of the season with a 33-29 defeat over the Johnsburg/Minerva Irish Jaguars.

Chazy 53, Lake Placid 28

The Lake Placid boys basketball team battled with the Chazy Eagles on Jan. 4 before the Eagles pulled away in the final two quarters to secure a 53-28 victory.

The Blue Bombers trailed 20-16 at halftime, but Chazy made a few defensive tweaks during the intermission that stymied Lake Placid’s offense.

Seb Cecunjanin led the way offensively for the Blue Bombers with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Owen Hayes chipped in five points, including one 3-pointer and Talon Jordon contributed with two points.

Dylan McAfee led Chazy with 17 points. Zamir Foster added 12 points for the Eagles while Evan Dwyer chipped in nine points.
