Bomber girls race to eighth place at state meet

The Lake Placid girls cross country team wrapped up the running season with a solid performance at the NYSPHSAA cross country championships on Saturday, Nov. 11. The Blue Bomber girls took eighth place overall in the Class D race at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.

Lake Placid was the lone school in the Tri-Lakes region to send a full girls team to the NYSPHSAA cross country championships, while two Blue Bomber boys competed as individual runners. Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake also had individual runners across both the boys and girls races. The Red Storm competed in the Class C race, while the Lumberjacks and Blue Bombers were in Class D.

Lake Placid’s girls squad finished in eighth with a total score of 224 points. South Lewis won the girls Class D title with 53 points, just ahead of Delhi-South Kortright with 57. Mount Academy finished in third place with 69 points.

Kai McKinnon was the top Blue Bombers finisher in the girls race. McKinnon covered the course in 21 minutes, 59.9 seconds for 46th place overall out of 111 runners.

Holly Erenstone was the next Lake Placid runner across the line, placing 81st in 24:33.6, while Jenna Fay placed 85th in 24:42.6. The Blue Bombers’ Harley Cohen (25:22.0) finished in 93rd and Clara Boutelle (29:09.3) was 109th.

Tupper Lake’s Raegan Fritts had a solid day, placing 80th in the girls Class D race in a time of 24:28.5. Ava Facteau (26:22.3) finished in 101st. South Lewis’ Brynn Bernard won the race in 18:56.00.

In the boys Class D race, Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay finished in 24th overall out of 115 runners, crossing the finish line in 17:15.5 and Blue Bombers teammate Colin Francis placed 53rd in 18:35.5. Van Furman of Tri-Valley won the race in 15:58.3.

The Lumberjacks’ Jonah Kendall (20:13.4) earned 91st place, while Sean Wood (20:52.2) was 110th.

After winning the Section VII boys cross country championships last week, Jake Kollmer was the lone Saranac Lake boys runner to compete on Nov. 11. Kollmer placed 20th overall in the boys Class C race, finishing in a time of 17:03.6.

Penn Yan High School’s James Tette won the individual title in 16:13.5. The boys Class C race featured 131 runners.

On the girls side, the Red Storm was represented by Phoebe Peer and Asa Bruno. The duo competed in a field of 131 runners.

Peer was the first runner to cross the finish line for Saranac Lake, taking 55th place in 21:39.7, while Bruno was 119th in 24:40.7. Emilia O’Leary of East Aurora, won the girls race in 18:42.7.
