Traffic detours, alternate routes set for Ironman race

LAKE PLACID — Temporary road closures on Ironman Lake Placid race day — Sunday, July 23 — will begin at 5 a.m.

Traffic pattern changes and delays will impact Lake Placid and surrounding communities as some regional routes, and specific lanes along certain routes, are closed to automobile traffic. New York State Police traffic control, in collaboration with Ironman officials, remind those throughout the region about the local road closure schedule:

¯ Route 73 will experience south/eastbound road closures from Lake Placid to Keene, beginning at 5 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m.

¯ Route 86 southbound to Lake Placid from Wilmington will be closed 7 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

¯ Bobrun Lane (Mount Van Hoevenberg) will be closed in both directions from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

¯ Route 86 westbound from Jay to Wilmington will be closed 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

¯ Route 9N northbound from Keene to Jay will be closed 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

¯ Haselton Road will be closed in both directions from Bilhuber Road to the Black Brook town line from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

¯ Haselton Road, from Route 86 to Bilhuber Road, will be open for two-way traffic in the northbound lane.

¯ Wilmington residents are requested to travel south only on Haselton Road between Route 86 and Bilhuber Road to get in and out from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

¯ Traveling from Lake Placid to Keene is prohibited from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.

¯ River Road will be restricted to local traffic only.

Notice to residents and businesses along the Wilmington Road from the traffic light to the Alpine Cellar: The route for cyclists will travel out and back on Wilmington Road/Route 86 from Northwood Road to the traffic light on Main Street at the Route 73 intersection. Use caution when exiting your residence as there will be bikes in both directions and they will be traveling in the opposite lane of traffic.

¯ LAKE PLACID TO JAY: From Saranac Avenue/Route 86, go left at Main Street at the High Peaks Resort to Mirror Lake Drive. Left on Northwood Road. Left on Cobble Hill Road. Left on Route 86 to Wilmington. Right on Route 86 to Jay. Expect delays in Lake Placid, Wilmington and Jay from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

¯ AuSABLE FORKS TO WILMINGTON: North on Main Street at Stewart’s to stop sign. Left on Silver Lake Road (Route 1). At the fork with Guideboard Road (right fork), take a left, staying on the Silver Lake Road, then a left on Bonnieview Road (County Route 19A) to Wilmington. Expect delays at intersection in Wilmington.

¯ AuSABLE FORKS TO SARANAC LAKE/LAKE PLACID: North on Main Street at Stewart’s to stop sign. Left on Silver Lake Road (Route 1). At the fork with Guideboard Road (right fork), take a left, staying on the Silver Lake Road, then a left on Union Falls Road (County Route 4) to Route 3. Left on Route 3 to Saranac Lake. In Saranac Lake, take Route 86 east to Lake Placid.

¯ AuSABLE FORKS TO KEENE: Off Route 9N south, cross the Jersey Bridge, take a right on the Sheldrake Road (Route 9R), following the AuSable River. At the end of Sheldrake Road, turn left onto Stickney Bridge Road, then turn left onto Glen Road/Mill Hill Road (Route 22). Turn right onto Valley Road (Route 58). Right on Trumbulls Corner Road (Route 12). Left on Route 9N.

¯ SARANAC LAKE TO I-87 SOUTHBOUND: Route 3 west to Tupper Lake. Route 30 south to Long Lake. Right on Route 28N to Blue Mountain Lake (the stretch of Route 28N/30 from Long Lake to Newcomb is closed). At Blue Mountain Lake, take a left on Route 28/30 to Indian Lake. In Indian Lake, follow Route 28 to North Creek. At North Creek, take a left on Route 28N, a right on Route 29 (Olmstedville Road) to Pottersville, bearing right on Route 9, left on Valley Farm Road to Exit 26 on I-87.

¯ POINTS SOUTH ON ROUTE I-87: From northbound Route I-87, take exit 26, left on Valley Farm Road, right on Route 9, bear left on Olmstedville Road (Route 29), left on Route 28N, right on Route 28 in North Creek, stay on Route 28 through Indian Lake (road becomes Route 28/30 in Indian Lake), right on Route 28N/30 in Blue Mountain Lake, left on Route 30 in Long Lake, right on Route 3/30 in Tupper Lake, follow Route 3 east to Saranac Lake (Route 3 bears right at the fork outside of Tupper Lake; Route 30 at the left fork takes you to Paul Smiths). Take Exit 30 on I-87 for travel to Keene Valley, Keene or Lake Placid. Expect delays at Keene.

¯ POINTS NORTH ON ROUTE I-87 TO LAKE PLACID: From southbound on Route I-87, take exit 31 to Route 9N north. Route 9N north to Elizabethtown. Route 9N north to Route 73. Right on Route 73 to Keene. Expect delays at the intersection in Keene.

¯ KEENE TO LAKE PLACID: Route 73 westbound lane open. Expect delays at River Road/ski jumps intersection. Access village of Lake Placid via Old Military Road.

¯ LAKE PLACID TO WILMINGTON/AuSABLE FORKS/I-87 NORTHBOUND: From Saranac Avenue/Route 86, go left at Main Street at the High Peaks Resort to Mirror Lake Drive. Left on Northwood Road. Left on Cobble Hill Road. Left on Route 86 to Wilmington. Straight through intersection on Bonnieview Road (Route 19A). Right on Silver Lake Road and follow detour arrows to AuSable Forks. Expect delays in the village of Lake Placid and in Wilmington from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
