LAKE PLACID — Two local athletes from the Lake Placid track and field teams qualified for the NYSPHSAA state championships at Middletown High School on June 9 and 10.

The Lake Placid track and field team will send Andrew Scanio and Kai McKinnon. All four qualified after winning their respective event at the Section VII State Qualifiers on Friday, June 2.

Scanio, a senior, won the 3,200-meter event in 9:52.46, edging out his teammate Aidan Fay (10:05.39) to qualify for his first track and field state meet.

Kai McKinnon, a freshman, earned her ticket to the state meet after winning the 2K Steeplechase in 7:52.15. Lake Placid hasn’t sent a track athlete to the state meet since 2019.

“We are incredibly proud of Andrew and Kai’s accomplishments this season,” Blue Bombers co-head coach Caitlin Delaney said. “Andrew had a career race, setting this school record while placing 1st for the first time at any sectional-level event. It was exhilarating to witness. Kai showed great progress this season as well, and it is nice to see her dedication to working hard every day paying off.”

Starting at $1.44/week.
