LAKE PLACID — Last season, Lake Placid’s Brady Tremblay finished as the individual runner-up in the Section VII Golf Championships competition, but during this year’s two-day sectional tournament on May 25 and 26, Tremblay wanted that top spot.

The senior ran away from the rest of the field at the Barracks Golf Course in Plattsburgh, finishing with a two-day total of 151 to win by nine strokes. Tremblay had the lowest rounds of any golfer on both days, shooting a 73 on May 25 and a 78 on May 26. Peru’s Nicholas Palmer (160) took second place overall, while AuSable Valley’s Porter Goodman (163) was third.

Tremblay’s opening day result, alongside his Blue Bomber teammates Chris Byrne, Grady Draper and Carver Bell, was also good enough to claim the school’s sixth straight Section VII title. The top four Lake Placid golfers combined for a winning 321 total on the first day of the 36-hole tournament.

The Blue Bombers edged out the Moriah Vikings, which was the only team that defeated Lake Placid during the regular season. The Vikings settled for second with a 351, while the Peru Nighthawks took third with a 353. The Saranac Lake golf team took seventh in the 12-team tournament after shooting a 387.

The championships began with 68 golfers from 13 schools — Willsboro didn’t field a complete team — and just 26 made the cut to reach the final round. The Blue Bombers’ top four golfers finished inside the top 10 to advance to the second round. The Red Storm’s Noah Jewtraw shot an 87 to crack the top 10 and Ryan McGinnis-Theis shot a 96, which tied for the final spot to make the cut.

Saranac Lake’s Carson St. Louis (101), Evan Hochwald (103) and Cooper Patnode (124) missed the cut, while Lake Placid’s Seb Cecunjanin (116) and Liam Gotham (131) also didn’t make it to the second round.

On the second day of the tournament, Tremblay, Byrne and Bell earned trips to the state championships after finishing inside the top nine. The state championships will be held at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira from Saturday, June 3 to Monday, June 5.

After finishing the first day in third place overall with an 80, Byrne, a senior, fell into a bit of a slump on May 25, shooting an 87 — but he was still able to take sixth place overall with a total of 167. Bell, an eighth-grader, improved from his opening round of 84 by shooting an 82 for a 166 total for fifth place overall.

Draper, a senior, missed the state qualifying spot by one position after taking 10th place with a total of 169. He shot an 84 on the first day and an 85 on the second. Draper will serve as an alternate if one of the nine Section VII golfers can’t make the tournament.
