LP girls, SL boys win Nordic ski race
The Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Keene Nordic ski teams competed against each other in a 5K classic race held at the Paul Smiths VIC on Thursday, Jan. 12.
Despite imperfect skiing conditions so far this season, the race marked the third of the season between the three schools.
“It’s been a tough winter for skiers in the northeast, but we’re happy to be probably the only schools in the state having Nordic ski races right now,” Saranac Lake Nordic ski coach Keith Kogut said in a statement. “The Paul Smiths VIC has been very supportive of our local teams- this is probably the only venue skiing on natural snow in the state right now, and we’re thrilled to be here racing today.”
The Saranac Lake boys finished with 10 points, which was good enough to edge out Lake Placid with 12. Lake Placid’s girls came away with the win, besting Saranac Lake & Keene with a score of LP- 9, SL- 13, K- 30.
In the boys’ race, Lake Placid’s Andrew Scanio, the reigning NYSPHSAA individual state champion, won the race with a time of 16 minutes, 13 seconds. Scanio was followed by Saranac Lake skiers Owen Keal (16:37) and Sam Ash (17:47) in second and third place, respectively.
Saranac Lake’s Tyler Burth was the winner of the girls race. Burth finished with a time of 20:42, while Lake Placid’s Maya Garrison (20:47) and Harley Cohen (21:25) followed in second and third place, respectively.
The three teams are slated to meet again next Thursday. The location and time are yet to be determined.
