SLP girls skaters drop two tourney games

LAKE PLACID — The Saranac Lake Placid girls’ hockey team suffered a two-game skid in the SLP annual Holiday Tournament at the Olympic Center’s 1932 Jack Shea Arena in Lake Placid.

For the first period of the first tournament game on Dec. 27, SLP found themselves in a tightly contested match against the Potsdam Sandstoners.

However, in the final two periods, the Sandstoners picked up the pace and roared past SLP 10-0.

Potsdam was led by Kennedy Emerson and Jessika Bullock. The pair recorded three points each, with Emerson leading the way with a hat trick. Bullock scored two goals while picking up an assist.

Five other Sandstoners recorded a goal on Tuesday, with Keegan McGaheran, Rylie Bicknell, Adalee DiMarco, Lauryn Bigwarfe and Alexis Smith each netting one.

Despite being outshot 36-9, SLP had a few scoring opportunities with Whitney Warner and Marley Logan each recording shots on net.

SLP’s goalkeeper Kelsey McKillip started the game in net and finished with 21 saves. Allie LaHart, a seventh-grader, came in during the third period and had five saves for SLP. Potsdam’s Sophie Shoen and Ava Johnson split time in net and combined for nine saves.

Canton 7, SLP 0

In the second game of the tournament on Dec. 28, SLP was topped by the Canton Golden Bears 7-0.

The Golden Bears got off to a quick start, scoring four goals in the first period and the team never looked back. SLP did pick up the pace defensively and held Canton to just three goals over the course of the final two periods.

Sydnee Francis led the Golden Bears with two goals, while Saige Blevins, Taylor Stoll, Adrianna Lesperance, Claire Polniak and Madison Arassian scored one goal each.

LaHart started in net for SLP and had 20 saves. Canton’s Myrah Bullock earned the shutout with six saves.

Following the two-game tournament, the SLP girls are slated to take on Beekmantown at the Olympic Center’s USA Rink on Dec. 30. The game will start at 5 p.m.
