LAKE PLACID — In a battle between two collegiate rivals, the Clarkson Golden Knights women’s hockey team proved to be the top team.
The Golden Knights defeated the St. Lawrence Saints 3-1 on Saturday, Oct. 22 to win the four-team Women’s Icebreaker Hockey Tournament at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.
The two squads had previously won on Oct. 21 to advance to the championship game. The Golden Knights defeated the Syracuse Orange 3-0, while the Saints defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders 2-1. The consolation game between Syracuse and Holy Cross — which was also played on Saturday — ended in a 3-3 tie.
Clarkson got off to an early lead in the championship game when Anne Cherkowski found the back of the net on assists from Darcie Lappan and Olivia Hanson just 7:20 into the game. The Golden Knights then extended their lead to 2-0 when Lappan scored on the powerplay at 2:15 in the second period.
Trailing 2-0, the Saints broke the shutout, with Katina Duscio scoring right before the end of the second period. Duscio’s goal was assisted by Abby Hustler and Julia Gosling.
