LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Summit Classic lacrosse tournaments kicked off on Monday, Aug. 1 with the first of its two tournaments that will span over the week.

The Summit Classic, which returns to this village for the 33rd time, is made up of two tournaments starting with the scholastic division tournament, which started early in the week, followed by the adult division tournament which starts on Thursday, Aug. 4. and will end on Sunday, Aug. 7. The games will be played at the North Elba Athletic Fields and the Lake Placid Central School District’s Jim Kordziel Fields next to the North Elba Show Grounds.

The scholastic tournament consists of youth and high school players, while the adult tournament features athletes from 25 to 70 plus.

Brand and event manager for Summit Lacrosse Ventures Kevin Leveille said the two tournaments combined have more than 200 teams, with a majority of the teams playing in the adult division.

Leveille said the total number of teams is similar to last year’s numbers but is smaller than what it was in the past.

“We’re happy to be back. We have our open divisions back,” Leveille said. “A smaller percentage of what they were, but I think the players themselves and the adults who like to hang and watch the best players in the world play are pretty pumped about that as well.”

Along with the tournament itself, the LPSC will hold special events throughout the week, including a 70-plus game at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4.

“We’re going to add a 70-plus game beneath the (Olympic) torch, where they used to play all of the games,” Leveille said. “It should be one of the first-ever — I think there has been a few 70-plus games played but none in the Northeast, so that will be cool.”

The game will consist of players who are all at least 70 years old — or will turn 70 by the end of the year. The game will also be played in the World Lacrosse Sixes format, which is a six-on-six lacrosse game played on a smaller field with a shot clock.

“We’ve already got about 30 players registered to play,” Leveille said. “It will be a very cool and interesting game to watch.”

The Summit Classic is expected to induct five people into the Legends of Placid Lax on Thursday as well. The ceremony will take place at the North Elba Show Grounds pavilion.

“We’ve got five new inductees there that are great long-standing people in lacrosse and in Lake Placid with us,” Leveille said.

The event will also have food vendors throughout the week.
