AUSABLE FORKS — After coming away with the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference title just a few days prior, the Lake Placid baseball team found themselves in a battle in the Section VII Class C semifinals, but the Blue Bombers fell short on the scoreboard, ending their season. The team fell to the AuSable Valley Patriots 6-5 on the road on May 21.

The Blue Bombers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Patriots quickly tied it up in the back half of the first.

After a scoreless second inning from both teams, AuSable Valley broke the tie in the third when back-to-back batters were walked with the bases loaded to score two runs. The Patriots tacked on one more run in the fourth to make the score 5-2.

In the top of the sixth, Lake Placid found some momentum after the team was able to get two walks and just one out.

With two baserunners on, the Blue Bombers called on Katie Coursen to pinch-hit. In her lone at-bat of the game, Coursen knocked the ball to the outfield, driving in a run while advancing a runner to third base.

Lake Placid rallied off Coursen’s big hit, by scoring two more runs on a two-run RBI single from Max Hyman.

After the Blue Bombers tied the game at 5-5, the Patriots scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.

In the seventh inning, Lake Placid had a huge opportunity to even up the game when Vann Morelli reached base by way of a walk. With just one out in the inning, Morelli stole two bases to reach third but after back-to-back batters recorded outs the Blue Bombers fell.

Senior JJ Ledwith laid it all on the line in his last career varsity baseball game, batting four-for-four to lead Lake Placid offensively. Morelli, a freshman, had a solid day from the plate recording two hits for the Blue Bombers.

PJ Colby started the game on the mound and struck out three batters before being relieved in the middle of the sixth inning. Morelli came in and struck out one AuSable Valley batter.

Lake Placid finished their season with a record of 9-5, while AuSable Valley advanced to the Class C Championship game.

Lake Placid 7,

Bolton/Schroon/Newcomb 5

LAKE PLACID — When the Lake Placid baseball team first played Bolton/Schroon/Newcomb on April 26, the Blue Bombers ended the final inning 8-6 after giving up four straight runs. At the time, Lake Placid’s head coach, Brian Brandes, was hopeful the team would see a different outcome later on in the year when the two schools faced off again.

On May 18, Brandes’ hopeful thinking came to fruition when the Blue Bombers not only took down Bolton/Schroon/Newcomb 7-5 on the road, but left with the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference title in the process.

Ledwith, Foster Wood and Jarrett Mihill recorded two hits each for Lake Placid. The trio had a double and single each. The team finished with eight hits.

Colby earned the win on the mound for the Blue Bombers. Colby struck out eight batters before being relieved by Morelli, who recorded a save with one strikeout.

Lake Placid jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, when Hyman and Jon Caito scored. The Blue Bombers tacked one more run in the top of the third, but Bolton/Schroon/Newcomb quickly tied up the game at 3-3 in the back half of the third.

After two scoreless innings from both squads, Lake Placid batted in four runs over the course of the final two innings to claim the regular-season crown.

Starting at $1.44/week.
