SARANAC LAKE — After recording a win a couple of days ago, the Saranac Lake Placid varsity lacrosse team struggled to get things going in their home opener on May 2. The team fell 23-8 to the Salmon River Shamrocks.

The Shamrocks, who currently sit at the top of the Section X standings, netted 11 straight goals to open the match and never looked back. The loss moved SLP’s record to 1-3 on the season.

Senior Alex LaDue had a solid performance for SLP on Monday, scoring four goals. SLP’s Lily Fisher, a sophomore, found the back of the net twice, while fellow sophomores Sabine Deckenberger and Kaitlyn Yando each scored one goal and Phoebe Peer picked up an assist.

While trailing big in the first half, Yando gave life to SLP when she picked up a loose ball in front of the net and rifled it past the Salmon River netminder to open the scoring for her team.

The Shamrocks answered back, stretching the lead back to 11, but Fisher fought through two Salmon River defenders to make the score 12-2.

After SLP gave up back-to-back goals, SLP’s LaDue buried her team’s third goal of the game right before intermission. The team then netted three straight goals to open up the second half. Deckenberger, LaDue and Fisher each scored to bring SLP within eight goals of Salmon River.

The Shamrocks quickly regained momentum and scored nine goals to close out the game. SLP wasn’t held scoreless, however, as LaDue scored twice during that stretch.
