LAKE PLACID — Things haven’t been going in the Saranac Lake Placid boys hockey team’s favor lately and after competing in the Lake Placid High School Winter Carnival Tournament over the weekend their fortune is yet to turn around.

Even though the tournament did not have an official winner — after some games were canceled due to the weather — the SLP boys’ likely would not have come away with the tournament’s title, after recording a tie and a loss in their two games.

SLP was defeated 9-0 by the Rye Garnets on Saturday, Feb. 5, but the team was able to follow up the loss by tying the Franklin Academy Huskies 3-3 on Sunday, Feb. 6.

The tournament’s first game saw SLP get outshot 57-16 by Rye, who is currently ranked sixth in the New York State Sportswriters Association statewide rankings.

With the high shot total, the Garnets were able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Rye’s Lukas Elovaara scored two goals, while Eric Lynch scored the other.

The Garnets then followed up early by taking on four more goals in the second period, which all came from different players.

Rye’s high-powered offense never fully let off the gas and ended the final period with two more goals.

Despite allowing nine goals, SLP’s goaltenders Cassidy Goodman and Brayden Munn had a solid outing in net. Goodman and Munn combined for 48 saves in the loss. Rye’s Anabelle Thomas earned the shutout with 16 saves.

In SLP’s second game, the team looked better, but it didn’t start that way.

Within the first six minutes of regulation, the Huskies, who currently ranked seventh in the New York State Sportswriters Association statewide rankings, scored two straight goals. Both goals were scored by Franklin Academy’s Edmund Collins, who recorded a hat trick in the tie.

Even though SLP gave up two goals early, the team found something they missed all weekend long — momentum.

The momentum shifted toward the SLP bench when Brady Tremblay found the back of the net to bring his team within a goal. Tremblay’s goal was assisted by Bailey Bartholomew.

Nearly eight minutes later, in the first period, SLP’s Noah Munn-Jennings tied the game up at two off an assist from Evan Willett.

Right as the first intermission was about to take place, a Huskies player received a penalty, which meant SLP would get a powerplay opportunity to start the second period.

Needing to break the tie, SLP’s Bartholomew rifled a shot past the Franklin Academy netminder to take the lead.

Just as things seemed to be going in favor of SLP, the Huskies tied the game before the end of the second period on a goal from Collins.

The game turned into a defensive standoff in the third period, with neither team scoring, the game was forced into overtime.

In overtime, both teams struggled to find any scoring lanes, which forced a tie.

SLP’s Scottie Nicholas was stellar in net. Nicholas shut down 20 Huskies shots in the tie while Franklin Academy’s Carson Roy had 29 saves.

Following the loss, the team fell to Northeastern Clinton at home on Tuesday to drop to 5-9-2 on the year. The SLP boys were slated to play Beekmantown Central on the road on Feb. 10.

Starting at $1.44/week.
