SARANAC LAKE — In a wild hockey game between Saranac Lake Placid and the Beekmantown Eagles, the SLP girls came out on top with a 4-3 overtime victory Thursday at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.

“We needed a win and we knew we had a chance today,” SLP head coach Butch Martin said. “We went out and got it going. We had a couple ebbs and tides, pretty much put it in their hands to get it going and get the win.”

The overtime winner came on the hands of Faith Warner.

After shots from SLP’s Dariana Patterson and Mia Nichols were shut down with under two minutes left, Warner collected a rebound in front of the net for the tap in goal to seal the victory. Patterson and Nichols were credited with assists on the play.

“It was nice to see Faith get the goal, she works hard,” Martin said. “We’ve got her in a different position. She got out there and got in the right place at the right time.”

Offensively, SLP’s Patterson led the way. Patterson played a role in all four of her team’s goals. She recorded two goals and two assists, while Sydney Dann found the back of the net once and had an assist in the win.

“Our top girls, Syd Dann, Dari Patterson, Mia Nichols and Faith, they played their hearts out and they were rewarded for it,” Martin said.

SLP had things rolling early, with Patterson finding the back of the net in the opening period. But after the Eagles’ Leah Coulombe scored right away in the second period the game was anyone’s to take.

Dann and Patterson tallied a goal each in the second period to give SLP a two-goal advantage.

Right before the second period’s end, SLP was given two penalties back-to-back, forcing the team to play five on three. While down two players, Beekmantown’s Lily Pratt was able to score one goal to bring the team within one of the tie.

In the final period, the Eagles got the game tying goal, with Beekmantown’s Coulombe collecting her own rebound to make the game 3-3.

With 30 seconds left in regulation, a Beekmantown forward shot a one-timer toward what looked to be an opening in the net, but SLP’s Kelsey McKillip was there to make a pad save to force overtime.

“I can’t say enough about our goalie,” Martin said. “She made some great saves. I think at least three breakaway saves. She’s the one that really did the job for us.”

McKillip recorded 26 saves in the win, while Beekmantown’s Kennedy Ritter had 19.

“It was just nice to get that win,” Martin said. “We had some tired girls. We were pushing a few of our girls. They knew they needed to get the win.”
