Barfly Open golf tournament returns for 43rd year

LAKE PLACID – The 43rd annual Barfly Open golf tournament will take place at the Whiteface Club and Resort in Lake Placid on Sept. 14. The tournament will benefit the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in Saranac Lake.

The two-person scramble, supported by RockBottomGolf.com and High Peaks Distributing, begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start, all the players in a tournament begin playing at the same time, but from a different place on the course. Teams must have a combined handicap of at least 20.

Tri-Lakes Humane Society President Melinda Little said over the past six years, the tournament proceeds have totaled in excess of $25,000.

“We have a budget of $275,000 annually. Of that, 17% comes from contracts with local municipalities,” Little said in a statement. “We have to fundraise for the rest. We typically put the money into the general fund and then dole it out as needed. Luckily, we have a community that turns out and helps us pull it off.”

The goal of the humane society is to find great families and homes for their four-legged residents.

“Right now, the focus is on getting them medically evaluated and then adopted,” Little continued. “We have to get them spayed, neutered, and fed, and look after their general care. That costs money, and that’s where the Barfly Open and other fundraisers enter the picture.”

High Peaks Distributing has been involved for over 20 years as a sponsor.

“This is a great event for us to be involved in as it is raising money for a great cause and a chance for many of our patrons and customers to celebrate a busy summer,” High Peaks Distributing General Manager Mike Shaheen said.

The tournament entry fee of $85 per person will entitle the player to golf, a cart, skins opportunities, and an awards ceremony at the end of the tournament. In 2020, the event had no closing awards banquet due to the pandemic, but the tournament this year will bring back the traditional post-tournament barbecue and the awards party.

Starting at $1.44/week.
