Local golf pro Ian Breen 4th at Donald Ross Classic

GLENS FALLS — Whiteface Club and Resort assistant golf professional Ian Breen fired a one-over par 72 on Monday at the Glens Falls Country Club to finish in a tie for fourth place in the annual Donald Ross Classic.

The event was reduced to one day as rain canceled the opening round on Sunday at the Sagamore in Lake George.

The Donald Ross Classic is considered a major championship among professionals in the Northeastern New York PGA Section.

Scott Berliner, assistant professional at Saratoga Spa, won the $2,000 first place check, shooting three-under par 68.

Breen, a former high school standout in Saranac Lake and coach of the Red Storm golf team, cashed a check for $1,100. Breen shot a three-over par 39 on the opening nine holes before rallying with a pair of birdies on the inward nine for a closing two under 33. He led the field in back nine scoring.

After two events, Breen is in second place overall behind Berliner in the chase for section assistant Player of the Year honors. Breen tied for 13th place a week earlier at Pinehaven Country Club in Guilderland.

He will look to take advantage of home course knowledge as the Whiteface Club, on July 13, will host the next stop on the Northeastern New York circuit.

Starting at $1.44/week.
