SARANAC LAKE – Festivities for the 35th edition of the Empire State Winter Games got underway Wednesday as the torch run passed through Dewey Mountain Recreation Area.

The torch run continues today at 3 p.m. in Lake Placid and will end in the Olympic Center’s Herb Brooks Arena. The opening ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. and will be headlined by a keynote address by Lake Placid resident Karen Courtland-Kelly, who is a former figure skating Olympian.

ESWG organizers reported that more than 1,500 athletes have registered to participate in this year’s games, which is a record.

The 19 different events will take place in Lake Placid, Wilmington, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and Paul Smiths. Competition begins today with ski jumping at the Olympic Jumping Complex in Lake Placid.

A local coalition of state, regional and local entities took over the organization and operation of the Empire State Winter Games in 2010 after the state cut off funding.

The following is a schedule of events. For more information, go to www.empirestatewintergames.com.
