Coming to Lake Placid in February to skate in another ice show, Cain was happy to be back performing in the 1932 rink. She enjoyed her time off the ice as well.

“It’s my favorite place in both the summer and the winter, it’s very peaceful and the people are very happy here,” Cain said. “It’s been fun because my brother and his girlfriend were here with me, so we went kayaking and I might go paddleboarding,”

After her productive season, Cain deserves a semi-vacation. She placed third at the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy, an ISU Grand Prix event, which allowed her to qualify for more Grand Prix assignments this season. The Grand Prix events are valuable competitions for elite skaters, allowing them to compete against the best in the world in a non-qualifying capacity, in preparation for events like the National Championships or the World Championships.

“I medaled at my first senior international competition, so that was really great,” Cain said. “I went on to nationals and had a really great short. I was really sick that week; I had the flu, so my long wasn’t what I wanted. But I learned a lot from the experience and channeled that into making me a better skater this season.”

This season, Cain was invited to two Grand Prix events: the Cup of China and the Rostelecom Cup. She will be competing alongside fellow U.S. team members such as 2014 Olympian Polina Edmunds. Cain is excited and honored to be competing in the events.

“I can’t say how excited I am. Just to be skating amongst the best skaters in the sport is absolutely incredible to me,” Cain said. “I’m really excited for the season to begin,”

The next Saturday Night Ice Show is Aug. 16, starring 2011 U.S. national champion Ryan Bradley.

Ice Dance Championships

LAKE?PLACID – One of the two figure skating competitions during the summer, the prestigious Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships was held in the Olympic Center from July 30 until Aug. 2, featuring ice dancers from all over the world.

In addition to the championship ice dance events such as short dances and free dances, the Championships also offered events like solo dance, adult dance and pattern dance. Skaters between 8 to 80 years old participated in these events, providing an option for those who either don’t skate with partners or don’t participate in the “traditional competitive track” to enjoy ice dance.

The Championships also hosted elite international skaters, who used the event as a way to evaluate their current programs and make changes if necessary before the season “officially” starts in the fall. This year, the winners of the Senior event were Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker (USA). Placing second were veteran Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships competitors Anastasia Cannuscio and Colin McManus. Hailing from the nearby Skating Club of Boston, the team performed in Lake Placid’s Saturday Night Ice Show last year.

This event wrapped up the summer figure skating competition season in Lake Placid, but there are still several skating events in the Olympic Center. Freaky Friday “fun competitions” on Friday afternoons allow skaters to express their creativity and be “judged” based on the entertainment value of their programs. The Saturday Night Ice Shows will be happening for two more weeks in the 1932 rink.
