Craig Wood squad takes third

RAY BROOK – The Malone Golf Club took top honors in the historic Northern New York Women’s Golf Tournament played at the Saranac Lake Golf Club in Ray Brook.

The annual tournament, which was played July 30 for the 82nd year, featured nine teams from across the North Country and a field of more than 90 golfers. In addition to Malone, teams competing were from Saranac Lake, Craig Wood, Tupper Lake, Canton, Potsdam, Massena, Ogdensburg and Gouverneur.

Each team had 10 players, including alternates, seniors and super-seniors, with the lowest six scores from each squad being combined to determine the final standings. Malone won by 16 shots with a 545 total.

Canton finished second with a 561 total, and Craig Wood and Saranac Lake grabbed the next two spots. Craig Wood, last year’s champion, finished third with a 568 total and was led by Sheila Preston, who turned in a tournament-low 77 to earn medalist honors. Saranac Lake was fourth with a 568. Carley Sawyer paced Saranac Lake with an 81, which was the next-to-lowest round of the day.

Gouverneur finished fifth with a 596 total, Massena was sixth just one shot back, Potsdam placed seventh with a 606, Tupper Lake was eighth with a 641 total and Ogdensburg rounded out the field in ninth place with a 645.

Massena’s Rose Bronchetti had the third lowest round of the day, an 83, and Nancy Somerville of Malone followed with an 86. Heather Mackinnon paced Gouverneur with an 87, Pattie Rowan-Lalonde led Canton with an 89, Karen O’Brien paced Potsdam with a 93, Anne Maltais led Tupper Lake with a 99, and Jennifer Stevenson was Ogdensburg’s lowest scorer with a 101 total.

Donna McMahon won the low individual net competition with a 71, and Nancy Gordon of Craig Wood was one shot back with a 72.

Kathy Clark had the low net score of the day for Saranac Lake with a 76 and Pam Savard’s 78 was the low net for Tupper Lake’s golfers.

Seniors and super seniors played nine-hole rounds with the rest of the field touring Ray Brook’s layout twice for an 18-hole round.

Sue Fish of Malone took the senior individual gross title with a 41, and teammate Lucie LaPlante won the super-senior gross with a 46. Senior individual net honors went to Linda Stone of Canton and Craig Wood’s Cora Trumbull was the super senior individual net winner.

Playing for Saranac Lake were Sawyer, Clark, Kelly Morgan, Peg Kelly, Betsy Nicastro, Victoria Sturgeon, Lisa Yanchitis, Nancy Reich and Jean McDonough.

Representing Craig Wood were Preston, Trumbull, Lynn Galm, Cheryl Pfeifer, Liz Jacques, Judy Shea, Connie Hickey, Nancy Gordon and Jean Cavallero.

Tupper Lake’s team featured Maltais, Savard, Sue Corneau, Tina Jessie, Mary Shaheen, Savard, Diane Buntich, Kate Malerba and Denise Moore.
